Guys, thanks. I hated to do it, but, $#!+, at least after a few months of bouncing around I actually did go ahead and buy a tuba, even if it wasn't exactly what I thought I wanted, but turned out to be what I needed, and have come to live with it well. Ya know, with my retrofit bell on my 186 being too short, having necessitated the longer main tuning slide, my 186 is actually approaching Piggy territory, as it is noticably shorter, even from a distance, than the other two guys and their 186's, one older 16 1/2 bell and S arms, and one newer with the 17 3/4 inch bell and uniballs. Sometimes, it and I sound great. Most often, we sound passable and actually contribute rather than detract from community band. And sometimes when I'm having a bad day and really making a mess of things, it does oink really badly!
Come on, Bob, we all want the best for you. Just get one, put your lips together, and blow....

I used to play bass bone with a very small tuba 'piece in one of the NorthTexas lab bands (let's just say: 'early afternoon'). Didn't hear too many complaints.Bob1062 wrote:I am fairly sure that he is referring to me, as I mentioned several times (when appropriate to the thread) that I liked my Bach 25 in my bass trombone for several things (it may have been an 18 back then). If you really want to try bigger mouthpieces, put a Bach 7 tuba mouthpiece in there. We had a guy (hasn't been here for a while, though) who thought that combination was absolutely perfect. I thank my lucky stars I never had to hear him play.

Good word, play. Could you go off on another tangent for awhile and tell us about your playing instead of all the horns you aren't going to buy any time soon?Bob1062 wrote:iiipopes wrote:OK, Bob, you won't buy the ones for sale. I DON'T want a 186 now.
I DON'T want one of those piggy's.
What tangents? Hell, you were the one that REALLY wanted to buy a NEW Jupiter 582 based on stats and whatnot (I don't seem to recall you saying you played it until you did and didn't like it; I may be a bit off here).
I know what type of horn and need*. There are a few that fit, and I have not yet been able to play them.

I feel I must interject something here. Let's all be nicer to Bob. After all, he has his act totally together(just ask him). By my calculation, he is right 99.8999% of the time(just ask him). And you won't find a nicer guy anywhere(j.a.h.). So give him a break.
I have a suggestion for Bob. Consider buying that famous recording with the lyric, "Why's everybody always pickin' on me?"
