You need to make the "pickup measure" a real measure and just hide the time signature in that bar. For example:

You have a phrase that ends in the middle of a bar and you need to make a bar line there so the next phrase starts at the beginning of a line. Say we are in 4/4 time and the pickup to the next phrase is a quarter note. You make the last bar of the preceding phrase into a 3/4 bar, and the next measure into a 1/4 bar. Hide the time signatures for each bar using the measure tool (you can check "hide time signature" for each bar).

I hope that was easy enough to follow!

Or after you select the meter you need for the pick-up measure, in the same window tell Finale to display the same meter as the measure before the pick-up measure. This will hide the meter in the pick-up measure. You will probably need to make a another shorted meter in the measure after the pick-up measure.

If you have any trouble, shoot me the file via email and I can help.

Take care,

Thanks Todd,

I struggled with this a couple of years ago on my copy of Finale 2001. Your suggested steps work fine in the older version too.
