Is it out there?

Post by John Caves »

I watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind last night and was wondering if there is a written transcription of the tuba part for "The Conversation" with the space ship?

Close Encounters

Post by Matt Ransom »

John -

The principal oboist in my orchestra is John Ellis who was the oboist on the original recording sessions for Close Encounters. He and I performed an abreviated version of the "conversation" last season on a Williams movie music pops show. Contact me via email if you want more info.

I had a copy in 1990

When I was a freshman at college in 1990, Jim Self came to our Octubafest (at B.Y.U.) and handed out copies of that part.

I looked for it a year or so ago when another poster on this board asked the same question. I could not find it.

But, at least that means copies are floating out there. I doubt that was the only time Jim handed them out.

Actually it was tuba (I am thinking just one, but not 100% sure), and contrabassoon.

I don't believe there were any tape recorded sounds.

Jim told us that he has been asked several times whether he was playing an "electric tuba", but that the timbre was actually created by doubling those two instruments.

Thanks for all of your responses. Does anyone have an email for Jim Self so I may contact him?

There are copies labeled "Property of James M. Self."
