Greetings all!
I was curious if anyone has any insights into the tuba part for Kodaly's Hary Janos Suite. I am not familiar with the part, but it looks like I will be playing it next month.
Thanks!

Definitely listen to the Napolean mvmt before you play it if at all possible. Some of it is a soli with the bones, and most conductors I think prefer the trombone sonority to dominate with the tuba adding substance an octave lower. You also need to hear the stringendo in several different recordings, because I've played it and heard it interpreted very differently from conductor to conductor. Some really step on the gas and don't let up, others back off a bit before the last two 8th notes, others just speed up a little.

It's a fun piece, even if you're just spending quite a bit of time listening to the other sections playing. Oh well. Such is the lot of an orchestral tubist...

I am convinced that 90% of the problems with rhythm, tone, intonation, articulation, technique, and overall prowess on the horn are related to air issues.
