Etre Ou Ne Pas Etre

Post by Biggs »

I stumbled across a tuba solo by Henri Tomasi entitled

Etre Ou Ne Pas Etre
Monologue D'Hamlet

and would like to add it to a recital program. However, I have never heard a recording or even heard of the piece before. Does anyone have any insight? Range is Bb below the staff to D above.

Thanks!

Follow this link. This recording features Arnord Jacobs with the CSO trombone section (circa 1970) performing the version for solo tuba and trombone ensemble.

Get the Chicago Symphony Low Brass Section CD through Wind Song Press. You might find someone famous playing this piece with an equally famous trombone section. I must be getting old when this piece is "new" again.

I've played this twice - I used Euph both times, as it's a French tuba part. Worked great! Great piece!

Isn't it a bass trombone or tuba solo?

Toby's Sampler cd has it with the NY City Ballet trombones accompanying, I believe. I like Toby's performance a little bit better than Jake's actually.

There's also a really good version of Etre found on Jozsef Bazsinka's CD "French Connnection." And don't rule out bass trombone versions, either; I know Blair Bollinger did a good version of this piece, as well.

Toby's recording is a MASTERPIECE. Really inspirational to me. Another CD that has it is "French Connection" by Josef Baszinka.

Excellent composition, great chance to be expressive.

My next question:

I own the version with piano accompaniment. Does anyone know of a source to readily purchase the arrangement with trombone accompaniment?
