Steve Curtis won the audition
Vurl Bland was runner-up

I would like to say that Vurl Bland and Jeremy Lewis both sounded amazing (at least what I could tell through the not-sound-proof walls of our warm-up rooms). I felt like it could have gone to any of us. I very briefly met Jeremy (not long enough to converse), and had an opportunity to have a nice conversation with Vurl. What a truly amazing guy! I also had the opportunity to meet and chat with several other tubists from Texas and Louisiana. I did not meet one person who didn't have that trademark friendly personality.

It is unfortunate the circumstances behind why this audition took place. I did not have the opportunity to meet Mr. Wolfe, but he sounds like he was a remarkable man who was able to touch many people's lives with his kind personality. I know he will be missed by many people.

I was also in the third group. I remember a few UNT guys, an LSU guy, and also a lesson teacher from DFW who had been a band director for a year. I was the one talking about the perils of getting a music ed degree and being a band director (I was one for 3 years), if that helps to ring any bells...

I send best wishes and good luck to Steve Curtis and all the fine musicians of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. Having played frequently with SSO during Mark Wolfe's tenure with the Symphony, I know that the SSO musicians foster goodwill and create a positive, encouraging environment not readily found in many orchestras today.

It is a sad reason for an opening, as Mark Wolfe was indeed a fantastic musician and human being. It will be tough shoes to fill.

The musicians of this orchestra held numerous "Make [Up] the Difference" concerts and took extraordinary measures to work with management and the community at large to ensure solvency. It's really an unfortunate turn of events with the orchestra.

Please pass along my regards to the other members of the SSO and let them know that many others outside Shreveport are supporting them.
