Printed Part for Sensamaya?

Hey folks,

Is there a way of seeing the part for Sensamaya, in advance? I may be playing it in the near future, but would like to see the music, in advance.

On an aside, can anyone who has experience playing the piece, offer up any insights?

When practicing, set your metronome to steady eigth notes. There is always a steady underlying pulse in the bass clarinet or percussion to work off of, but it is best to internalize the pulse because your very first entrance is on beat 7. Some condutors will be clear, some not.

If I had it in my arsenal many years ago when playing this piece, I would have done it on F. The tessitura makes the F a logical choice and you may find it adds a sense of security, if there can be such a thing in this piece, that may not be there on a big horn. It is more of a chop buster than it looks. Watch the theme when you play it the last time with the bones, it is different!!!

I would suggest getting the LAPO recording with Sallonen. Norm Pearson "owns" this piece and would be the perfect example to emulate.

For a wonderfully filmed performance, search out the Bernstein Young Peoples Concerts DVD's. Joe Novotny does a great job on the piece, and it was recorded in 963 before the piece was a staple of the repetoire. The orchestra is fantastic!!!

It is nerve wracking, but exhilarating when done right. Good luck and remember, ENJOY IT.

The score and orchestral parts for several pieces by Revueltas are available from Luck's, but not Sensemaya. It's also not listed at Kalmus or Boosey.

What is the source for renting the score and parts for Sensemaya, and how much is the rental fee?

The Sensemaya score is printed in the Norton Anthology of Western Music, 5th edition, Volume 2. The anthology probably goes for around $50.

Prepare yourself for a whole variety of tempi, 'cuz each conductor seems to have his own line on the "real" tempo. (I know: true with any excerpt, but especially true with this one...)
