Hey everyone. Soon, the position for trombone instructor and a tuba/euph instructor are both opening up at WTAMU. Dr. Joseph Cox is retiring and we're having to hire two instructors to take his place. I'm sure that they will start looking for auditionees soon. I'll keep everyone posted.

Little update here. The dept. has gotten approval to split the position into separate professorships, but have not yet secured the funding to do so. Until then, I don't think either job will appear in their open listings on their HR site.

Alright! Update time. #1 As of saturday the 16th the positions have been approved. For the trombone positons I have heard of two people. The prof. from TCU, and Bob G..........

As for the tube/euph spot. I spoke with Parantoni at the convention and he is sending down 5 doctors to audition for the spot. Also John R.......... will be auditioning. That's all I know for now. When I know something else I'll post it.

Thank you for keeping everyone updated on the position. I believe this is an exciting time for WT as they are able to expand their low brass positions. I am sure there will be plenty of applicants for both the trombone and tuba/euph positions since they are both full time and WT has a reputation as a fine music school. However, listing potential applicants on a public forum, such as this, might not be the best idea. It is not fair for the search committee or the people who have been named in this thread as potential applicants.

Sorry for the rant and good luck to everyone applying. This is a great opportunity and I am sure the school is going to get a great teacher.

For the record, there's only one person (possibly two) at WTAMU that I know of who's actually spending any time on this board, and that time is very limited. As far as I'm aware of, none of the faculty even know this board exists.

It isn't uncommon for the perfessers who are members of a search committee to "google" an applicant's name to see what they've been up to recently. So, you see, it doesnt really matter who knows this board exists...it's the use of the name that can create a problem.

I have stayed on the sidelines here as long as I could. Put me in coach.
I will try to stay as p.c. as I can. First it's great that the University has secured two positions for the low brass studio. This was long overdue. I really hope they will find two top notch candidates. OPINION ALERT: the University would be best served finding amazing teachers and musicians who did not attend this institution. I hope they don't just go in house and miss out on a better candidate. As Jerry Jones said in a recent hire they need to get this one right. Is anyone with me on this? May the absolute best two candidates win these jobs.

I don't think that will be the case. For two reasons...1 in the past two school years we have hired 5 new music faculty. None of which attented WT. Secondly of the 8 people I have HEARD OF that are auditioning only one attended WT. So there is a low chance but the one I'm thinking of Is still an outstanding tubaist and teacher but doesn't have a Doctorite.

Job Description:

Teach private lessons to tuba and euphonium students. Recruit low bass students (tuba/euphonium) as music majors. Meet departmental and university standards for instructional responsibilities, intellectual contributions, professional service, and collegiality and professionalism. Note: This position is a restructuring of a low brass position into two positions, the other being trombone. Building a studio will be a top priority. There will be a need at first to fill out the remaining half of full-time appointment with teaching that matches the qualifications of the candidate and the needs of the department, such as marching band assistant, jazz studies, or music education. The Department of Music at West Texas A&M University has 21 full-time faculty, 5 part-time faculty, and 200 music majors. Degrees offered by the department are the bachelor of music (majors in performance, music therapy, and composition), the bachelor of music degree (all-level [teaching] certification), the bachelor of music with elective studies in business, the master of arts in music, and the master of music in performance. The university has approximately 7,500 students.


Skills or Experience Needed:

A Doctorate in music for Assistant Professor rank is required. A Master's degree in music minimum for the instructor rank and the candidate will be required to earn a doctorate within five years. Candidate must meet a criterion of personal performance and musicianship that represents the highest level of professional tuba or euphonium playing.


Preferred Qualifications:

Successful teaching experience at the university level is desirable. Other teaching area(s) that matches the qualifications of the candidate and the needs of the department, such as marching band assistant, jazz studies, or music education. Preference will be given for proven successful experience in studio teaching and recruiting.

Update. Not a low brass thing, but still feel putting it up here wouldn't help. As of Tuesday March 5th, it was announced that Ron Lemon, the french horn professor, will also be retiring. I am sure that horn applications and interviews will be seperate dates for the low brass since it was just announced. Let me know if you would like to stay informed about this.

I have very fond memories of Mr. Lemon from my undergrad days at West Texas. He would come out and play football on band Fridays after rehearsals, with his short-shorts, button-down shirts, and mid-70's boston celtic socks on. What a character. That guy has more brass knowledge than I could ever hope to have.
