I think this piece is one of those some tubist look at and go "this is dumb. I'm not playing it." Not seeing the true greatness of the piece. To me it is one of the best concertos for tuba. The Aria is deceptively beautiful, and both fast pieces are in the perfect range for the player to give energy and drama.

A concerto the "casual" audience can get, and the "sophisticated" audience can appreciate.

When I was her student at BG, I heard Ms. Brown play the Broughton a few times in the lead up to her first CD release. I also have a recording of Ms. Brown the band at BG playing the Broughton. It's a great work and she plays it as well as anyone.
