Recommendation of Recordings

Hey guys. I realized the other day, while going through my CDs, that I am lacking in the tuba department. I'm rather ashamed to say that being, since tuba is my thing haha. Anyways, I was hoping I could get some help on what recordings are the quintessential of tuba works. I know that's rather subjective, but I can still get a good idea of what I need to have in my collection.

Bobo--And tuba play Hindemith, Kraft et al (his first album)
Gravity is Light

Fletcher/LSO--VW concerto
Travelin' Light (Pilafian) that's the album title and the band

Pat Sheridan--Lollipops

Floyd Cooley's with the Bach Eb sonata

Anything recorded by Walter Hilgers. Can't go wrong with Velvet Brown either.

Some of my favorite tuba cds:

Ben Pierce: Wheels of Life
Gene Pokorny: Tuba Tracks and orchestral excerpt cd
Pat Sheridan and Sam Pilafian: Dos Amigos
Roger Bobo: All of them
Sumner Ericson: Live at (from) round top (plays straight through an etude book not the most exciting music but damn good playing)
Oystein Baadsvik: ALL

That's just the short list I can call up at the moment. There are many many more fantastic recordings out there.

"Bobissimo," Roger Bobo (Hindemith, Effie, Into & Dance, Kraft, etc.)
"Romantic Tuba," Floyd Cooley (Bach Eb, Suite Concertante, etc.)
"English Tuba," Eugene Dowling (VW, Arnold Fantasy, Jacob Suite, etc.)

Also consider:

"Concertos for Brass" (Fletcher doing the Gregson Concert with Brass Band)

"British Tuba Concertos," James Gourlay (VW, Gregson, plus a few more obscure works that I find interesting)

Other great albums for brass players:

Also pick up a copy of the Antiphonal Music of Gabrielli by the Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Chicago Brass Ensembles and a copy of the two disc greatest hits collection (to start with) from the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble (Fletcher playing). I enjoy listening to the German Brass, too.

I strongly second everything Oystein, the guys amazing. Sheridan's stuff as well.

The Perantoni and Sotto Voce disks are both on Itunes if that's your thing.

And does anyone know when Al Baers next cd is supposed to come out. I've heard soon, but I haven't heard an exact date.

I would recommend anything by Oystein, but if you are looking for standard rep. start with Danzas:

SIVELOV Tres Danzas (2005); HINDEMITH Sonata; JACOB Tuba Suite; BERNSTEIN Waltz for Mippy III; PLOG 3 Miniatures; PIAZOLLA Milonga del Angel; Invierno Porteno; Adios Nonino.

Look for a new CD sometime this Spring/Summer. It will contain some concertos some of us may have heard of:

John Williams

Alexander Arutiunian

TorbjÃ¶rn Iwan Lundquist

If it is available, I will have copies at ITEC in Cinci.

Haven't heard much of any mention about Harvey Phillips recordings ... what a pioneer he was. Some of his better known recordings included the Alec Wilder Sonata, Donald Swann Two Moods, etc. Also did Vincent Persichetti Serenade No 12 and the Wilder Suite f/ Fr Hn, Tba, Pf. Steve Shoop on this board is working with Mr Phillips on a re-release of earlier recordings, so these may be once again available ... jump on 'em. Harvey inspired SOOO many people and careers, and seems to get little recognition on this board.

Bobo is GREAT ... most of the good work is in Bobissimo, Gravity is Light Today. As a soloist, he's as close to a Gold Standard as we have.

John Fletcher's VW Cto with LSO/ Previn should be in there, as said above.

Toby Hanks SAMPLER has some jaw-droppers in it. The David Reck and John Steven pieces stand out.

Floyd Cooley's Romantic Tuba has some particularly fine work in it. Cooley developed a real theater-filling sound ... wide up-close vibrato that up close sounded horrendous, at the rear of the room the most amazing thing you've heard.

Gene Pokorny's Tracks, Big Boy, Excerpts ... don't miss 'em .
