Nice tangent...has there ever been an audition for a euphonium spot with a professional orchestra? Or saxophone, for that matter? Not just for one piece on one concert...an actual position with the orchestra.Bob1062 wrote:How about for an orchestral audition (admittedly probably pretty rare!)?
+10 points for anyone who can find an example of either...

Yes in both instances.Todd S. Malicoate wrote:

The auditions have been to be the "first call euphonium" or "first call sax" when rep for those instruments comes up, essentially meaning that you are the orchestra's euphonium or sax player. That said, the player is contracted individually for each service.Todd S. Malicoate wrote: Not just for one piece on one concert...an actual position with the orchestra.
If what you meant was have there ever been auditions for a full-time-plays-with-the-orchestra-on-a-weekly-basis euphonium spot, I doubt such a position exists in any symphony orchestra.

Really? I suppose I believed that it was just a word-of-mouth or friend-of-the-principal-trombonist thing whenever a euphonium was needed. I had no idea how orchestras hire a saxophone player for Bolero or whatever else.Tom wrote:The auditions have been to be the "first call euphonium" or "first call sax" when rep for those instruments comes up, essentially meaning that you are the orchestra's euphonium or sax player. I was fortunate to have played banjo twice with the Tulsa Philharmonic (Rhapsody in Blue and on a later concert Highlights from Porgy and Bess). I didn't have to audition for this - word got to the personnel manager somehow that I had played the piece at OSU once before and presto!
Of course not...there wouldn't be a euphonium part every week, or even every season.Tom wrote:If what you meant was have there ever been auditions for a full-time-plays-with-the-orchestra-on-a-weekly-basis euphonium spot, I doubt such a position exists in any symphony orchestra.
Sure.Tom wrote:Do I win?
