Re: What instrument would you choose if you had to start over?
I throughly enjoy playing Tuba, Contrabass Trombone, and Bass Trombone, however,
I would love to play what my Father can play, Piano and Pipe Organ.
With the advent of Synthesizers, as a keyboardist, you can "play" any intrument.
Plus a large enough Pipe Organ can keep up sonically with a whole Orchestra.
There is no other instrument I envy or would really want to play.
['cept maybe Bagpipes!]

Electric bass.
If I put half as much time on it as I have on tuba (for the last 8 years I been practicing seriously), I could be as good if not better than many of the guys whose albums I constantly listen to. Not even talking about the $$$ if you make it big, I think I would enjoy playing heavy metal more on an electric bass, than classical on a tuba.
Classical and heavy metal have always been a very close 1st and 2nd as far as my favorite kind of music to listen to, although that's odd because I really don't care for most orchestral string playing (except when it's supplemented by the winds and percussion). I also dislike soprano sax and am not a real fan of jazz, but I do enjoy 'jazz influenced' music; if that makes any sense.
My distant 3rd favorite music to listen too would probably be country, and don't believe that 'hip-hop' and 'rap' are actually viable alternatives for anyone to listen to.

Piano... because you never have to bring your own instrument with you. As long as you're a concert pianist, there's going to be an instrument everywhere you go!!
And I'd also play pipe organ. Nothing like having an orchestra at the tip of your fingers/toes!!!!

Ophiclide...Nothing like the tuba's ancestor...
Besides that? Bass Bone. My secondary instrument.

i've always wanted to honk on contra-bassoon. i can't get enough of a good bassoonists sound. my other choices would be bass trombone simply because it's freakin' sweet, piano since every girl ooo's and ahhhh's over it and orchestral bass. i taught myself to play electric bass but now i wish i had proper orchestral training on upright bass and then went on to learn jazz/electric bass.

I would start out with percussion, mainly for the marimba. I love the tone colors of it.
I would also consider the euphonium. I see it as the best of both high/low brass worlds - can do sweet trumpet runs and can get low like a tuba.

If had I had to choose something else, I would be a vocalist, so I could sing Whitacre's music in its original setting, the band arrangements just can't compare. And for the musical theatre aspect, I would love to sing in shows like Jekyll and Hyde and Sweeney Todd.

Re: What instrument would you choose if you had to start over?
I would choose clarinet. All of the clarinets. They are certainly cheaper to get in on at the ground floor (though expensive afterwards, reeds and trimmers and all). Just check out the price tag on a contrabass, though. It makes a tuba look quite the bargain. The main reason for my choice of clarinet is not the price, though, it is the wonderful sound that it takes a lot of practice to get from it. The sound can be so quiet, and so LOUD, and soft and PIERCING!!!!! and it all comes from a single instrument.
Any time at all is tuba time. Watch for the signs.

Did you ever hear PDQ Bach's "Pevertimento for Bagpipes, Bicycle and Balloons (S.66)" ? There's a lot of "great" literature out there!!!!!!

The Taming of the Shrew: "I did but tell her she mistook her frets, and bowed her hand to teach her fingering; When with a most impatient, devilish spirit, 'Frets, call you these?' quoth she, 'I'll fume with them.' And with that word she struck me on the head, And through the instrument my pate made way, And there I stood amazed for a while, As on a pillory, looking through the lute; While she did call me rascal fiddler And twangling Jack, with twenty such vile terms, As had she studied to misuse me so."
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
