So I bit the bullet..

Post by theanalogkid »

That's right, I did it. I ordered a Thor! I'm super excited about it!! Called up Bill at Tubadome, and he's been really great to work with. Should be here mid-week next week. Also ordered a Cronkite gig bag for it, which should be here in a couple of weeks.

I promise to have pictures up as soon as I get it and have a chance to play for a while.

I'm just way too excited and had to tell someone, and I thought who better than this place!

Congratulations...that may very well be the only Thor in the state when you receive it. Outstanding!

Congrats, Aaron. I would be really intersted in a report on buying a tuba, sight unseen/played.

Ya know I was worried about this myself, but after playing one already, and talking with Bill at Tubadome, I'm confident it'll all work out. There'll be a full report, trust me :-)

Is uniqueness the single relevant parameter? The Thor likely will be a fine tuba by most standards.

bloke played one on a symphonic tour to Texas. Where did that tuba end up?

Gosh, no, Klaus. Just observing that the OP and myself are both from the great state of Oklahoma...a real tuba wasteland. I didn't mean for that comment to be taken as speaking to the quality of the instrument at all.

Sorry, I did a misreading. I live in one of the small countries where state and nation is the same. This of course doesn't apply for the US. Even if I would be able to name all of your states on a map, I like many Europeans tend to see the US as one very uniform and unified nation/state. The funny thing is that Americans consider Europe much more unified than it really is. Without digging into politics: the EU isn't a European idea. It is an American concept intended to diminish the risk of a repeat of WWII.

No problem, Klaus, and no offense taken or implied. I hope the OP enjoys the new horn.

That would be the important thing. Monday I sent of the money for a rather special tuba found here on TubeNet. As the seller is a touring musician the instrument will not arrive until the end of the month.

Thursday a Danish saxophone friend relayed a message about an F helicon with 4 Berliner Pumpen. Made around 1905 by the company, which is now owned by my friend. Normally I donate the instruments that i find from this brand to his collection, but I might fight a bit for this one, if it is playable. So I am not above having my interest caught by potential acquisitions.

Enjoy the Thor; buying yourself a new axe, no matter what size, shape, or reputation it has, is always fun!

Waiting for this delivery will be painfully slow. Just be glad it's already in the US and you don't have to wait for it to come from Germany! :)

True that, I spent all afternoon dinking around when I got my PT-3.

By the way, to the OP. I hate you. I want a Thor.

Thankfully I've got a rather busy weekend with work selling these new phones that came out today to keep my weekend occupied.

By the way, people keep calling me "the OP". I assume that means "Opening Post" or something of the like, and not like Opie from the Andy Griffith Show.

Bethany, huh?

I was born and raised 5 blocks from SNU (only then it was BNC)...attended Bethany schools. Parents still live there. Nice place unless you want to buy beer...

Does Phil Moore still conduct the 4th of July gig out at Eldon Lyon park?
SD

I am convinced that 90% of the problems with rhythm, tone, intonation, articulation, technique, and overall prowess on the horn are related to air issues.

Wow, small world! I'll be starting my fifth year at SNU this fall, and went to Bethany for middle/high school.

There is no longer any band stuff at the 4th of July deal. They decided it was much wiser to invest money in bringing in some washed up old country singer. BUT, Phil Moore does direct MY band at SNU, as well as other brass groups. Though, I'm more accustomed to calling him Dr. Moore.
