King rotary valve BBb

Post by Alex C »

So nobody saw the King rotary valve (4 valves) BBb for bid with a Buy It Now price of $2700?

I didn't either, but a friend of mine did and the horn should be at his home before August 1. Lacquer, in case you're interested.

There have been listings for the rotary Kings several times in the past year or so. I never regarded them as serious auctions since they kept popping back up with 'buy it now' prices. I hope your friend didn't get scammed.

Have these pictures been run before? If this is has potential to be a real scam I would like to know about it. Might be able to do some damage control if it is.

Scam or no, only 94% positive feedback on that many transactions would give me pause. Hopefully it works out for your friend. Should be a sweet horn.

I don't know if those pictures are the same as were run before. I don't remember the prior sale (s) as being offered with cases. I did a search of closed auctions and only saw the latest one. However... I'm sure I've seen a couple of those King rotary tubas run on Ebay in the last year or so. There just aren't that many of those things around. Good luck!

A couple of thoughts:

Seller seems legit, has sold brass before, feedback strikes me as bad communication and possibly slow shipping.

Most interesting: Paypal buyer protection; it could be up to $2,000.00 on an item and this seller has offered that much on other items before but here with a Buy it Now of 2,700.00 he only offers 200.00?

One potential thought as to try to clarify the position as to whether someone actually has the horn they've posted questions about; ask the seller to email you a picture of the horn with a copy of today's newspaper laying upon it and the headline/date visible. I seem to think it would be hard to do this if you didn't actually own it. This is my plan if I find something really neat on Craigslist that isn't close to me and is highly likely a scam.

Good luck though, and hopefully the horn comes through ok.

There are quite a few pictures of the King rotary horns here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~marge/king_2340_b ... .htm#older ... maybe the webmaster knows who owns them. I was communicating with a fellow who plays one but his name escapes me at the moment. Unless I'm mistaken, I seem to remember that there were two bore sizes of rotary Kings.

I started collecting those King tuba pictures to get clear the difference between a 1240 and a 2340. Didn't work out that way but it's still a nice collection, isn't it?

I'm glad you have taken the time to create your collection of Kings. BTW.... I don't think King really knew all the differences between the 1240 and the 2340! :)

The horn is (was) mine. I posted pictures of it here in a previous post, and asked for repairman recommendations. It's going to take about $2,000 to restore it, which I really don't have to put into a tuba right now. The gentleman who purchased it is going do the de-denting himself and then send the horn to Lee Stofer, from what I understand.
Am I to believe that the members of this forum believe that I'm making a mistake?

I took a look at the link for the pictures of the King horns, and I saw a photo of one of my horns, there, too.
This horn is also mine:

Yep. ... and it's listed under a different seller name. Bill, I hope you didn't get screwed on the earlier listing.

I reported the listing. The listing couple of weeks ago noted the seller as being in Canada. This time, he's in Atlanta using a different name. My guess is that he is actually in Bulgaria!

Dan, read my last post on this thread - the horn in question is (was) mine! I'm legit. Well, for a Canadian, anyhow.

You are legit, but that last listing wasn't. It's been removed.

I enjoy discussing various horns that show up on eBay, but I agree with Sean and DP here. When the subject turns to the legitimacy of the seller, etc. the thread is over and everyone needs to move on. I realize this is a public service aspect that most are trying to do here by warning others, but rules is rules.

Scams on eBay never stop. If Sean doesn't want his bandwidth wasted on eBay shenanigans, then so be it. Caveat emptor, period.

I hope Sean continues to overlook some of these eBay 'scam' posts. All too often, folks in a rush to buy a horn get caught up in the frenzy and fever of the moment. The tuba community needs a resource for this type of information.
