UK composer Terry Treherne has just completed the long awaited brass band score for his ‘Concertante for Euphonium’.
Originally written for Euphonium & String Orchestra, the beautiful work has been premiered by its dedicatee Charley Brighton in two previous versions. The first with Malcolm Stowell (piano) in a recital at St. Mary’s Slough and the second (in its new key) with the City of London Winds (John Andrews) at a concert in St. Paul’s, Covent Garden, London, where Terry was able to hear the music live in rehearsal and in the concert.
Terry Treherne was conducting Alder Valley Brass when he first worked with soloist Charley Brighton in 1990. After a gap of some 15 years, Charley premiered Terry’s first work for Euphonium and winds, ‘Recollections’ with the BBC Elstree Concert Band , recorded live at the Maida Vale Studios in London.
Written in a single movement, the wind band version of ‘Concertante’ opens with meandering lines of accompaniment, mainly in the lower half of the band, before the soloist enters with a sustained melodic line. A lilting 6/8 “Allegro con spirito” sets the lively euphonium part against side drum figures and interjections from various sections of the ensemble. The flutes are used only sparingly, most of the emphasis being on the middle and bass sections.
The main theme appears in full for the first time, initially accompanied by the clarinet choir and tuba, later replaced by a brass chorale, followed by an effective few bars for trombones and tuba. Much of the solo line is in the upper register, with long, expressive phrases.
The return of the “Allegro” is marked by an oboe solo answered by the soloist, before the full sound of the ensemble leads into the finale, in which the majestic solo line soares over the accompaniment.
With the main theme of the work being so endearing, Terry has also reworked it into a slow solo for Baritone and brass band titled ‘Sincerity’ for Sue Vel as a birthday gift.

Charley is currently working with Ascot Brass in Berkshire with a view to the premier of the new brass band version, and will premiere yet another new Euphonium solo by Terry ‘Tranquillity’ (with organ accompaniment) in his next recital at St. Mary’s on November 22nd.
Terry’s continuous output of Euphonium works provides some very nice additions to the repertoire for both soloist and audience. Long may they continue.
Charley Brighton.
