YEP-321 lead pipe replacement?

Post by Will »

I am planning on having my 9 year old Yamaha 321 euphonium cleaned, polished, and possibly have the lead pipe replaced to fit a large shank mouthpiece. Has anyone on here had this done? I've also heard of just changing the receiver. Does this have the same effect? I know it's a lot cheaper. I am primarily a tuba player so even though the horn plays great, I feel like I need something more open. Thank you for any advice.

When I first switched to the euphonium, I desired to have a decent instrument to be used in outdoor gigs where I didn't want to damage my beloved YEP-642S. I got a 321S and had a 642S leadpipe put on the 321. It was a fabulous instrument. Too bad I couldn't get used to the four valve in line on top setup. So I sold it.

Since I did that conversion, Todd Clontz in Baltimore has developed the technology to convert the stock receivers into anything you want.

Are you certain it was a 642 leadpipe and not a 621? The 621 has the same bore size as the 321, but has a bass shank receiver on the leadpipe and is a 3+1 instrument.

Actually, I'm not completely certain. I asked for the 642 leadpipe/receiver from Chuck Levins and I took the part they ordered for me to Todd Clontz for installation which he did. It may have been the 621 receiver/leadpipe.

I will probably go with getting a new receiver installed. How much does a reciever cost? Yamaha or Weril (from a previous suggestion).

Although I actually bought a new Yamaha receiver that would accept the large shank mouthpieces, I mentioned in my first post that this is no longer necessary. Todd Clontz has developed the technology to change whatever you have right now into whatever you want. He changed a Willson 2900S for me from the stock European shank receiver to the large shank receiver. It was a flawless job and he charged me all of $40 to do it. It looked just like a factory job!

I'm probably going to replace the leadpipe on line as it seems to have a hole in it.

What do we think? Large or small receiver?

Who knows what part I should be looking for?

Large for sure! The small receiver limits your choice of mouthpieces drastically!

You should be able to get a leadpipe for Yamaha 621 at Allied Supply.http://www.alliedsupplycorp.com/. Cost a few years ago was about $10.

There was a discussion about this (which linked to this TubeNet discussion) on the trombone forum here: http://tromboneforum.org/index.php?topic=53436.0;imode

Anyone fancy ordering one for me and popping it in the post to the UK?

I'll pay upfront/in advance.

If they have it in stock, it will save me a heap of time trying to source it here.

Will I need a receiver as we or does it come with one?

Yup ... email me at paul@tkachenko.co.uk" target="_blank with the costs and I'll paypal or bank transfer the money over, or whatever you like.

We could also think about mouthpieces whilst we're at it!

So, the price I have over here for a 642 leadpipe is £225 or $365.

That does seem a lot - could I get something from Allied for cheaper?

I need a bit of help from the USA if I can get it cheaper.
