Last week I tried a (used) Cerveny 701. The 601 is the same model, but this one has a red brass lacquer finish. Next week I will try a Yamaha YBB 321 with serial number 6766 and one with serial 11752. Is there anyway to trace back the age of the Yamaha tubas?
After trying the Yamaha’s I’m going to decide what to buy (the Yamaha or the Cerveny). I was surprised how easy the Cerveny was to play with its big bore…well…everything is big on that one
Yeah, I'd agree with the elephant. I'd get the Cerveny. I used a YBB-321 for 2 years before I got my wonderful Mirafone. The Yamaha doesn't even come close to the sound on the Mirafone.
Heck, in my opinion, Yamaha's marching tubas (NOT convertables) sound better than their 321's.
I think I might end up as a grumpy old man when I get old...

...When I've played *very* loud in the low range on several of these tubas, a weird acoustical thing occurs where the sound "backs up" and an A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A thing occurs...
On my high school's Cerveny's that would happen on certain notes, not necessarily/just in the low register. I took off the screw-on thumb ring and I think most of it went away.
The Yamaha is a 4 hour drive (there and back). Is not worth spending the time and diesel to try the Yamaha? I was very curious about the Yamaha because (most of the time) I play the YEB 321…and I like it. Is the YEB 321 in Eb land that much better than the YBB 321 in BB land?
Yesterday a Gebr. Alexander Mainz Bb tuba came up for sale:
I contacted the seller and managed to make an appointment for today (only a short drive).
Maybe the Cerveny and the Yamaha have to wait for another buyer
P@trick,
yep. If the Alex has anything close to decent pitch (which wasn't as nasty on BBb as with their CC instruments, in my very limited experience with the BBb), TAKE IT.

I'm extremely envious.
The sound of the Alex took me...and I took the Alex . I was impressed
The valves on this one need some work but that can be done by a repair tech.
The wrap is not 100% identical to the Alexander model 164, but judging from the bore/bell/height sizes (similar to the 164) it's sort of a pre-164-model ...If You Know What I Mean
