Top 25 Band and Orchestra Excerpts for Tuba?

Post by GJDavis1 »

Hello all,

My teacher has asked me to find the top 25 band and orchestra excerpts for tuba. I was wondering if you all could provide a list, maybe of the top 15 band, and the top 15 orchestra, excerpts. (I know thats 30, but I want to be safe)

Thanks for your help!

Here's an idea:

1) Wagner, Ride of the Valkeries: 125 – 142
2) Mahler, 1st Symphony: Mvt III: 4 before #3 - #4
3) Wagner, Meistersinger: Beginning - A, J - K/L
4) Prokofiev, 5th Symphony: Mvt I: #3 - 7 after #5, 2 before #14 - 3 after #47; Mvt. IV: #94 - #95
5) Berlioz, Hungarian March from Damnation of Faust: #4 - 2 after #5
6) Stravinsky, Petrouchka: 3 after #100 - 4 before #101, #121 - #122
7) Bruckner, 7th Symphony: Mvt I: F - H, M - N; Mvt IV: P - S
8) Hindemith, Symphonic Metamorphoses: Mvt II: 4 after L - 2 after P
9) Respighi, Fountains of Rome
10) Berlioz, King Lear: #21 - #24
11) Berlioz, Symphony Fantastique
12) Brahms, 2nd Symphony: Mvt IV: O - end
13) Bruckner, 4th Symphony
14) Gershwin, American in Paris
15) Mahler, 5th Symphony

others:
Mahler, 6th Symphony: Mvt IV: #104 - 9 before #105, 3 after #116 - 5 after #116
Tchaikovsky, 6th Symphony: Mvt I: O - 3 after R; Mvt III: GG - end; Mvt IV: L - end
Wagner, Ein Faust Overtüre (A Faust Overture): the first 3 bars
Berlioz: Corsair Overture
Berlioz, Romeo and Juliet: Mvt I
*Holst, The Planets Suite
Mahler, 2nd Symphony: Mvt V: #10-#11 (chorale)
Mendelssohn: Overture to Midsummer Nights Dream: 13 after A - 33 after A
Moussourgsky arr. Ravel, Pictures at an Exhibition: Bydlo
*Revueltas, Sensemaya
Strauss, Also Sprach Zarathustra
*Strauss, Ein Heldenleben
Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel
*Wagner, Lohengrin: Prelude to Act III
* Prokofiev Romeo and Suite Suites
Vaughan Williams Symphony No. 6

* could be placed in the top 15, in my opinion

Just orchestral, I don't know much about band. However, I would imagine some standard pieces would be on there such as:
Hindemith Symphony in Bb
Holst 1st and 2nd Suites
Grainger Linconshire Posey, Shepherd's Hey
Chance Variations on a Korean Folk Song
Jacob William Byrd Suite
Vaughan Williams Folk Song Suite and Toccata Marziale
various Robert Russell Bennett arrangements
various pieces by Alfred Reed

Here is a "top 30" list I did a while ago for my teacher (took a bunch of old audition lists and ranked them. These are the 30 top excerpts with 7 extras that were notably absent but still worthy). I guess I could've made it an even 40, but it's a work in progress.

Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra
Berlioz - Benvenuto Cellini
Berlioz - Hungarian March
Berlioz - Le Corsair Overture
Berlioz - Romeo and Juliet
Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique
Brahms - Symphony Nr. 2
Bruckner - Symphony Nr. 4
Bruckner - Symphony Nr. 7
Bruckner - Symphony Nr. 8
Delibes - Coppellia
Frank - Symphony in D
Gershwin - An American in Paris
Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphoses
Holst - The Planets
Mahler - Symphony Nr. 1
Mahler - Symphony Nr. 2
Mahler - Symphony Nr. 5
Mahler - Symphony Nr. 6
Mendelssohn - Midsummers Night Dream
Mussorgsky/Ravel - Pictures at an Exhibition
Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet Suite
Prokoviev - Symphony Nr. 5
Respighi - Fountains of Rome
Revueltas - Sensemaya
Stravinsky - Petrouchka
Shostakovich - Symphony Nr. 5
Strauss - Also Sprach Zarathustra
Strauss - Alpine Symphony
Strauss - Ein Heldenleben
Strauss - Till Eulenspiegel
Tchaikovsky - Symphony Nr. 6
Wagner - 'Fafner' Solo
Wagner - Die Meistersinger
Wagner - Faust Overture
Wagner - Prelude to Act III of Logengrin
Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries

(I know you asked for 25, sorry)

Canadian military band auditions have invariably had Russlan and Ludmilla as well as Academic Festival Overture. Other standard pieces would include Fingals Cave, Oberon, the Holst Suites, Hindemith Symphony and Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite.
