I wonder if he'll insist on a cash payment when he and his buyer "meet" to exchange the horn for payment.

Sounds kind of dangerous, and also sounds like a convenient way to trick the auction site out of their "cut." Notification to eBay has been sent.

Seems like this person has a problem with decimal points.

He's certainly a jerk - I sent him a humorous remark on the price (I didn't read anything else - I assumed it was a typo; just being helpful). He was exTREMEly rude in response.

eBay still charges for the listing price, right? Should be a goodly amount on $10 million.

Don't hesitate to call with questions: 714-726-8145(note that my voice mail is a generic automated message and has no recording of me speaking my name). Leave your name, number, and I'll get back to as soon as is convenient
I know that I'M very comfortable leaving my name and number on some anonymous answering machine, which MAY get back to me when it's convenient. Well, at least somone will...

I tried to bid just so the seller would have to pay eBay fees on the amount he listed - figured it would be worth one negative feedback.

EBay wouldn't place my bid.

I'm willing to sell this tuba for $4,4000 on the spot for anyone who can pick it up or meet me somewhere to get it, which no additional shipping cost.
If only someone could "buy it now" ...er...or something like that...if only it existed...

It started out at 6 grand. I'm sure he didn't know how to pull the add so he just edited the price up to the point that no would bid when he sold it outside eBay. I really think he is just a dumb newbie.

You're probably right, but folks should know the "meet me with cash for my product" robbery method has been used frequently on Craigslist and others in the recent past. Meeting a stranger with a wad of cash hoping that they have the tuba they promised you and won't mug you is ill-advised at best.

I would suggest that anyone presented with such a situation at least insist that the meeting is conducted in a heavily-traveled public area...and don't go alone!

He may be a dumb newbie, but the text of his listing is a clear attempt to cheat eBay out of their final value fees...they really dislike that, since on high-priced items like tubas eBay gets $36.31 plus 1.5% of anything over $1,000 in the selling price. A $6,000 tuba sale in an auction-style listing would be worth $111.31 to eBay.

To answer another question on this thread...the maximum insertion fee for an auction-style listing on eBay is $4.00 for any starting or reserve price over $500. It doesn't matter how much higher the starting fee is. Changing his starting price from $6,000 to $9,999,999 only prevented people from bidding.

what is it ... "we are the freak jury, sauce for the goose ain't sauce for us ganders"?
I don't think anywhere in my TubeNet posts, or anywhere else for that matter, I have claimed NOT to be a jerk.

In this thread, I stand by my use of the term. The guy isn't necessarily ripping off a potential buyer, but is stealing from eBay. The seller is benefiting from advertising on the eBay site while avoiding the fees involved with the sale. In other words, he is stealing free advertising from eBay.

What a jerk . . .
