College Selection Advice

Hey guys, I just wanted a couple of opinions before I make my final choice.

I'm a senior in high school this year and have been studying with the tuba professor at the local university for the past 4 years off and on (marching season, no way of getting a horn, etc), but ever since I have purchased my own horn, I have been studying with him consistently for about the last 6 months.

My question is, should I stay and continue studying with him and get my undergrad from this university, or go to LSU (which is only an hour away), and study with Dr. Skillen.

I have been accepted to both universities, and plan to major in music, I just needed to know if it is a wise decision to continue studying with the same person, or change it up a bit.

Joe Skillen is one hardcore tuba player, and it is a competitive studio.

What I would say, take a few lessons from him as well...its only an hour, and see which professors teaching style you like best. Just because the school with the other professor might be small, it might be a better fit for your career goals. Plus, you might not like Joe's teaching style, or you might love it.....and fitting in with the studio is very important too.

Exactly the advice that is required. Don't ask for anything more than this. It's the truth. Check out the other teacher and studio. If you think it's a fit, then great. If not, then don't go. You will learn much more in a place you feel comfortable.

I agree with the check it out advice, but would also add that attending a big university away from home (even only an hour away) is a much different experience of growing up and getting an education than being esentially still at home. That is a choice you will have to make as to what's best for you, but for me....moving across the state to go to school was the right thing to do.
