James Jenkins Tuba Stolen

Post by P8822 »

A forward from James Jenkins:

Greetings Gentlemen:

I hope that this note finds you all doing well. Things here have been
better. Someone stole my Marzan Tuba from my car yesterday. It was parked
in my driveway at home. If you hear of anything or anybody trying to move a
Marzan, please let me know. I'm checking the pawn shops, schools, etc. I
could use some help keeping an eye out on eBay. If my Marzan doesn't turn
up soon, I will be looking to buy another 4 or 5 quarter Bb. Please let me
know if you here of anything interesting.

Talk to you all soon.

Thanks,

James E. Jenkins

Please keep your eyes and ears open for this instrument. James is an outstanding player and individual and does not need this to happen to him. This instrument will be very hard to sell if our community gets the word out about this theft. I do not have any photos of the horn, but I will try to post them later.

Feel free to contact me directly via tubenet, my email pweikle@fccj.edu" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank or cell phone 904.534.7990 if you hear anyone trying to sell this horn. Let's help James find it!

Thanks,

Paul Weikle

Here is a picture. It is a very distinctive horn which James has had restored and customized!

And this happened to a guy who gives back to the community in a big way. The Jacksonville Symphony has been having continual financial troubles, too. Not a good year for James. Somebody find the horn!

I've spent a lot of time researching where the Marzan tubas are and who owns them. If I hear of anything regarding this horn you can rest assured that I'll forward the information to the proper individuals. This horn will be very difficult to move without someone here knowing about it.

Since it got lifted in Jax, I would recommended folks in the Atlanta, Savannah, Miami/Ft.Lauderdale/West Palm areas keep an eye out as well. Jacksonville serves several (not-so-great) purposes, as it is a one day drive from Miami (stopover point), half-day drive from ATL (meeting point), major port, and large city.

Hopefully it turns up quickly and locally, but I wouldn't rule out it being moved like other goods.

If it doesn't turn up, maybe Mr. Jenkins can locate the Marzan Connie Weldon had made that Ed Firth used to have. That was a pretty solid BBb in the same size (IIRC) with five valves.

It's a damn shame that horrible things such as this have to happen. It always seems to happen to the ones who do the most good, but, as all things do, this will pass and we just have to fight and stay strong through them.

I will definitely keep my eyes peeled here in Miami and on the internet. My teacher is Mr. Jenkins's brother, Calvin, and I'll be communicating with him on this.

Keep strong, all.

How very sad. James is a hell of a player, and joins us up here in Cleveland periodically. I hope to hell he gets this instrument back - he doesn't deserve this, and I hope they find and throw the book at the thieves.

James,

I live in the West Palm Beach area. What is the serial number on the horn and what finish is it? I will start checking with pawn shops and on Craigslist.

The tuba in that picture is not it.That's the tricked out York BBb.The stolen horn is a standard B&M/Marzan 4 piston with the top facing main slide.I remember James had it sent off and overhauled and silver plated when I was a sophomore or junior at the U.of Alabama. He borrowed the university's MW25 for a little while. When he got the Marzan back,I think they were doing Symphonic Metamorphosis that week.James was TWICE as loud.Apparently the valves were a little leakier than he thought. What a GLORIOUS sound :D :D :D .I've been striving and failing for that sound ever since.Thanks,James. P.S.,thieving scumbags have a very bad part of hell reserved for them.Edit-oops,I just noticed the OP did say he didn't have a pic of the Marzan.Maybe Tink could post some of his to give the tubenet deputies something to look for...

No... the tuba shown in the pictures that I've seen of James Jenkins is not a Marzan. I dug around and could not turn up a picture of Mr. Jenkins with his BBb piston Marzan. But... here's a shot of my Marzan BBb piston horn to the left of my Marzan BBb rotary.

(I suspect that Mr. Jenkins' Marzan is a lot nicer than mine!)

I think that piston horn is a large Yamaha F in the picture.

Have there been any break-throughs regarding the recovery of this horn?
