Phantom Regiment and Jupiter?

Looks like Phantom is dropping King to go with Jupiter. Didn't even know that Jupiter made a contra. Anybody seen this new line of marching horns?

Another similarity between pros and top corps: they can sound pretty good on whatever horn the sponsor provides :D

I have played the Baritone and Euphonium.

The Baritone: The valve set seems like you have to really reach out a long way from what I was used to (Dynasty). Sounded decent.

The Euphonium: Very nice sound, and quite light compared to other marching euphs. However, I did hear of one where the soldering joints came apart after a while (few months)

I have heard the trumpet gets a very pinched sound in the upper range.

I think The Academy used this hornline last year.

Just got home from the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, and I had a chance to try the Jupiter contra. I don't have very much experience with that type of horn, but here's my two cents for what it's worth: the low and middle range were more or less fine, a little too easy to overblow the notes for my taste; but once I got more into the high range, it just sounded kind of weak and forced. Like I said, this could just be my inexperience with contras speaking, but there it is. Hopefully someone with more experience got to try it too, and will chip in whatever I'm missing.

EDIT: The one I tried was the "5080S Quantum Tuba," according to the website.

I haven't tried the new Jupiter contra but I did march Regiment in 2006 when we played on the new King 1151SP Contra as a prototype. All 14 (plus the 1, maybe 2 we had extra) where hand made and all had their differences as one would expect. The entire year we where talking with and giving our opinions to the people at King. Plus Pat and Sam came to a couple of our rehearsals and made some suggestions for the horn.

No matter what, Regiment will make these horns sound AMAZING! They might make some modifications to the horns once they get them in their hands as well. I'm sure they will be in talks with Jupiter and have some suggestions to give them. And I'm sure Jupiter will listen since they are dealing with the current DCI World Champions and an always great hornline.

Knowing from experience, if there is an issue with a particular pitch on any of the horns or a certain range, they will spend hours, upon hours, upon HOURS in sectionals fixing the problem.

Having been a Phantom Phan for a great while now, I certainly do hope that they don't settle for anything just because one company is the lowest bidder... That doesn't at all seem like Phantom's style, so hopefully Jupiter is really stating to come out with some decent instruments. Let's go for 2 in a row, Phantom!!!!!!!!!

Most of these instruments are being modified at Sawday and Holmes Music in Long Beach right now. I saw them last Saturday and had a long chat with Don Sawday about them. He and Patrick Sherdan had something to do with some of the design changes in this line of horns. Don was modifying custom tuning triggers on the mellophones and the tubas when I was there. The tuba has a trigger mounted where the players left hand supports the horn and is operated by the fingers on the left hand. It has an adjustable linkage to the main tuning slide and is spring loaded so it will return when released. The marching tuba looks really nice and Don said Sheridan and the tuba section at Phantom Regiment did a play test with the Jupiter, King and Kanstul horns and they claim that the Jupiter played the best by far. I'm not one to argue with Pat Sheridan when it come to tubas!

I'm not sure why anyone is actually shocked:
Caption Head= J.D. Shaw (member, Boston Brass)
Boston Brass= Jupiter Artists

that said, they really did do a good, long "taste test" and didn't "settle", in any way.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I knew they would be making changes and it's good to hear they are doing them now. We didn't even get our new horns in 2006 until we where at Rockford College... Also good to hear that they made the choice that fits them best! Should be a ROCKIN contra section in 09!

I don't know about how most of them play...I haven't gotten to try playing any of them. But I did see one baritone example, and was surprised at how complex the kick lever is for it. I don't think that anyone from Academy was real impressed by them, but that's from their first year. I hope Jupiter fixes/fixed the problems with the kick levers.
I wish I had gotten a chance to try their horn (contra) but the field reps that went to the booths at the DCI shows didn't have one there. They were the only manufacturer that didn't, IMO.
EDIT: Hope they didn't have anything to hide...
