As I understand it, "Sanders" has been a stencil line for Custom Music for many years -- current models made in China, older ones (like this one, from the looks of it) made by Cerveny/Amati. Here's a link to their current page:TubaTinker wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0328741325

The only 'Sanders' tubas I've been familiar with is the Sanders 'Imperial'.... the Chinese one. I wasn't aware there were earlier ones. Thanks!Kevin Hendrick wrote:As I understand it, "Sanders" has been a stencil line for Custom Music for many years -- current models made in China, older ones (like this one, from the looks of it) made by Cerveny/Amati. ....TubaTinker wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0328741325

I am far from a tuba history guru but I did google and this link to Jim Self's site. It lists a 1922 Sanders tuba in his collection.

Re: What's With This One??
Yes, Sanders tubas were made by a European manufacturer back in the 1970's. When I was going to Long Beach State there was one on display at the local music store and I used to go into the store every couple and weeks and play it. I was trying to convince myself to spend money I didn't have and buy it. I liked the horn and thought it played really nice. But I never did find the money and someone else bought it...
This appears to be the same model tuba, with the same minimal bracing.

Re: What's With This One??
Sanders (with the s at the end) is the stencil name that Custom Music used for stencil-made tubas back in the 60's and 70's. They were good horn but not great horns. Not the same design as Cerveny but almost certainly made in their factory.
The Sander tubas (without the s) were pre-WWII horns which were state of the art for the time. The ones I have played were all remarkable. The factory was destroyed during the war and the newer ones are not the same instruments at all.

My Sanders is definitely an Amati. I removed the Sanders name plate out of curiosity last year to see what was under it.

From what I've been able to find, it looks like they became a part of Amati after the war:Belltrouble wrote:... does somebody know about the Bohland&Fuchs factory?
The used to be located at Grasslitz too and used to employ more than 500 people at pre-war times...........

Re: What's With This One??
The Cerveny name was placed under the Amati-Denak umbress during the communist government. Sanders, to my knowledge, was produced only for Custom Music under an exclusive contract. I have never seen Sanders available elsewhere until the recent flood of stenciled horns.lgb&dtuba wrote:My Sanders is definitely an Amati. Re: What's With This One??
Yes, Sanders was the CMC name, I'd bet it's still theirs. There was a Sander, and a Sandner, unrelated by importer. At the time, at least the CMC stencils were all made by Cerveny--a Piggy, a more typical longbell 4/4, and maybe a quasi-kaiser. I'm not sure about the last.
