An excellent post, Dr. Sloan. I especially like the part about balance. I believe this is often missing in many individuals' approach.

As written in an earlier post: Melody playing is all fine, but only if it happens in all keys.

Only by playing in all keys one gains the ability to handle up- and downwards leading notes. If one only plays in a narrow band of keys, it is very easy to get accustomed to bad intonation habbits. Jazz players often are very good at working around the circle of fifths. There is no reason why band and orchestra players should not be equally good (the professionals are good, or they wouldn’t get tenure in any band or orchestra).
