On german ebay there is an interesting tuba for sale. The text says it is an C/F-tuba from around 1950-1960.

I'm not going to bid on it, since i only play Bb-Tuba. But the pictures show a very interesting "double-rotary-valve-construction". I can't imagine how that works.
Can anyone explain it?

Re: C/F-Tuba (Gebr. Alexander)
the idea is simple: it works like a double french horn: in the leadpipe there is a valve that selects between C or F tubing, and after that valve there are 2 tuba-tubings that end in the same bell (like in a double french horn).

Thank you for the explanation! But, do you mean, the complete tubing of all 4 valves is double, with valve slides and all? Otherwise, intonation would be quite bad, wouldn't it?

Yes. Every valve has two sets of slides. This is a compensating double, in that the extra tubing is added after the change valve is depressed. I would not worry about this as being a "usable" instrument.KHHS wrote:Thank you for the explanation! But, do you mean, the complete tubing of all 4 valves is double, with valve slides and all? Certainly very interesting! It must be very heavy for its size with the two sets of tubing?

Translation from the ad-AND I was told by the Alex factory that the 'floral' screws on the rotors you see on old Alex's dates them from WW II and before--I have always thought that to be incorrect since I thought they used them into the 1950's, but this is what the factory says-FWIW

On double tubas, one side is usually not very good and the other side is unplayable.
