Altieri will make a bag for the size horn (her website askes for measurements on any tuba, even a standard model).

I like the altieri bag, others really like the Chronkite bags (I have no first hand exposure to them).

IMHO, the Altieri (the only one I own) is difficult to work with insofar as loading the horn is concerned. My 186 catches on the interior fabric and has torn a section of it. Then there's the matter of the 'hat.' It provides very good protection for the bell rim, but can be a bother to fit on the horn, while it's being held. I have seen and tried the side loaders from other makers and would prefer them, but can not afford to re-invest in another gig bag.

That having been said, the Altieri is well made and offers good protection. I just would not buy another. The HB50 is such an incredibly valuable instrument, that I would suggest you try to become familiar - through actual demonstration/usage - of both types (side vs top loaded). I'm sure you know several other players and would have access to their expertise (live, I mean as opposed to just the written reviews).

I understand, I have a 186 also, and really like the toploading feature, rather than the side loading style. I don't find that mine catches on the interior cloth, but maybe I'm lucky....

I have a Miraphone factory bag for my 188. I dont really enjoy the toploading feature but it is quick, unless you catch the valve rack on the top whilst putting it into the bag. I do like the fact that it has a zipper "flap" style closure. I have never had a problem with ripping because the side of the bag that is exposed to any sharp parts is made of a tougher nylon-like material but the other 2/3rd's of the bag is made of a soft material. I am not a huge fan of Alteri bags simply because of the "hat" feature but otherwise I do like the features. I have not had any experience with side loading bags, but I can imagine that they would take more time to load/unload. I can also see a greater chance of zipper failure at some point becuase of the length of continuous zipper. The only complaint with the miraphone bag is that fact that a large leather folder + mouthpieces and accessory bag (oils and such) does not fit very well. But I have three leather folders, a Miraphone velcro pouch, 5-10 mouthpieces, a Dr. Beat (The smaller mid-sized version), and a tuner so I might not be a typical tuba player.

Altieri has a standard Yorkbrunner bag. Just call her and tell her you need a Yorkbrunner bag and she knows exactly what you need. I like my Altieri. Top-load and hat don't bother me a bit. The accessory pocket is cavernous as well. I carry 2 folders, 2 mpcs, pocket tuner, pocket metronome, oil, small screwdriver set and a small towel in mine with room to spare.

I must say that Glenn probably has the best bags right now. I cannot think of anything but great things to say about him and his products.
