clip on microphone?

Post by elimia »

Does anyone have any personal experience with a clip on mic? An affordable one would be a plus. This is for a euphonium.

How well does it pick up the bass range when you've got it on your horn? I ask because I've built something like this for my tuba, but it didn't respond very well in the low range. Of course, I'm sure cheap parts (~$5.00 total at RadioShack) and hasty construction (five minutes before we went onstage) didn't help... Basically, is it a worthy investment for tuba, or more suited to higher-pitched instruments?

The Crown GLM-100 has been used by many soloists - including myself and Steven Mead. Here's a link. Affordable - - - better than most microphones...

Hope this helps.

I use a Beyerdynamic Opus 62 for live sound re-enforcement on my euphonium.

Haven't recorded with it, though.

The AKG 419 works very well. You can adjust the placement to get the sound wetter or drier as you choose.
Good luck, Phil

Clip on mics should be used as ornaments...not as primary mics.

I see a lot of pros using like 6 or 7 mics...a clip on being one of them.

But the thing about Steven and Pat is that the clip-on is one of MANY mics they use.

Then they do some serious mixing and editing with every mic to get that ideal sound.

I have a 419 for my tuba. i bought that one because it has a frequency response down to 20 hz, but i see that the 519 which replaced it only goes down to 60hz. Should be low enough for a euph however.

You could probably get by with a dynamic mic for a euph to rather than a condenser. i thought Shure used to make one but I couldn't find it online.
