These are not heavy weight pieces but the audience will enjoy them.

"How The West Was Won" arranged by Robert Hawkins (music from the movie)
"The Good Ol' West" by James Christensen

and parts of this one would fit the theme:
"A Very American Overture" by James Barnes

And let's not forget the euphonium solo "Home on the Range," arranged by Erik Leidzen. It's probably only for brass band, but while in the Coast Guard Band I did a few solos with brass band parts. We just used the regular brass section and let the woodwinds rest.

He rode a blazing saddle
He wore a shining star
His job to offer battle
To bad men near and far
He conquered fear and he conquered hate
He turned our night into day
He made his blazing saddle
A torch to light the way

When outlaws rule the West
And fear fills the land
A cry went up for a man with guts
To take the West in hand
They needed a man who was brave and true
With justice for all as his aim
Then out of the sun rode a man with a gun
And Bart was his name, yes Bart was his name
I think the students should watch this film as part of the "enrichment" section of musical arts.

Mark Heter wrote:Here's one you can't beat - "The Death of Custer or The Battle of the Little Big Horn" published in 1875 by Carl Fischer.
A bit off-topic, but you should re-check that date. Unless the composer was clairvoyant it is at least a year early.

A number no one has mentioned is "Kansa" composed by Lloyd Conley and published around 1960. It incorporated "Home on the Range" the official State Song of the State of Kansas. We had the music in the Fort Hays State University band library when I was librarian in the late 1960's.

The composer of "The Death of Custer" was Lee Johnson.
