Which larger CC's needs the euro shank mpc?

Post by jon112780 »

I know a lot of the older Alexanders have a huge receiver, but what about 'newer' horns like the PT6/6P, MW 2145/2155/2000/2165/THOR/BAER, Gronitz, etc..?

The HB2 I used to own worked fine with the standard shank mpcs, but was curious about the larger CC's.

Both of my old Alexander CC tubas and my 5/4 Rudy Meinl required large shanked mouthpieces.

Thor is meant to be played with an American shank.

I played on a standard shank Miraphone mouthpiece for decades and never (other than on an ancient pig Alex) had a bit of trouble with a shank/receiver fit. The shank was swallowed by a large Nirschl's receiver, however it worked just fine. No wobble at all. This was also true with all the B&S, Gronitz, Miraphone, MW, Mattel, and Acme horns I ever tooted on.

I too would like to know the reasoning behind the "euro" shank.

BTW, while trying mouthpieces recently I went back and forth between a standard and euro shank on a G&W Caver. It seemed to me the only real difference was the distance the euro stuck out of the receiver. I went with the standard. It will fit everything that I will likely ever play.
