R. Strauss: Feierlicher Einzug..... which CD?
Last evening was the final concert of Great Music for Great Cathedrals at Seattle's St. James Cathedral. Once again, as it has been performed so many times over the years, the Strauss was played, and done very well. But it's always performed in the version with organ. I'd like to hear what it sounds like in the original version for just brass and tympani. Does anyone have a favorite recording?

I don't know if there is a recording of it, but on the very last day of the Tanglewood Music Festival, all the brass players in the program are brought together at 7:00 PM to perform this piece. We're talking about 75 to 100 brass players. The sound will send chills down your spine. If you can get a copy of that performance, it is probably the largest ensemble to perform that work.
Great piece.

There are a couple of commercial recordings of this available.
I do not own the "Complete Music for Wind and Brass recording, but I believe it is the brass/timpani version:
Strauss: Complete Music for Winds and Brass (on volume two, I believe)
Richard Strauss: Music for Symphonic Brass (I have this one...nice recording)
You might (???) be able to locate these online, if not, try a library catalog is your area.

If you can find a copy, there is a great recording played by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Seiji Ozawa on CD with Eine Alpensinfonie (my personal favorite Alpine) on the Philips label (454 448-2). However, I don't think it is still in the catalog, so you would likely be looking for a used copy.
