TubaTinker, Very Nice - great finds!

Those are both really big tubas. How do you find they compare in tone?

BTW It is interesting to see that the design of my 701 is apparently almost identical to that old Cerveny

I was all excited about the Conn jumbo sousaphone and ready to comment, then I scrolled down to see the Cerveny Kaiser.

Any idea how old the Kaiser is?

That jumbo souzy is a Mutha. I dig the gold wash bell. In remarkably good condition for what it is and its age. Must have sat dusty and in the dark for a long time....

I dig the little round valve 'buttons' on the Cerveny. Sure doesn't look like there is a lot of leverage developed there to help move the rotors. Again, in fantastic shape for the age and type of horn that it is.

Nice haul....

To answer a few of the above questions....

- The 'jumbo' plays quite well.... especially from the D below the staff waaaaay down. The low A literally scares the hell out of the trombone section!
- I'm taking the Kaiser to a German band gig tonight. It seems to handle quite well but the proof will be in the playing. (I'm taking along a back-up... just in case

)
- There's no real way to know but I'm just guess that the Kaiser is about 100 years old. It's in incredible shape for it's age. The bell is cherry. Hope it stays that way!
- Not only is the bell gold-washed... the entire horn is satin-gold. The pictures just don't show it well.
- Comparing the two... I haven't really had much of a chance to play the Kaiser yet (will tonight)... but I took the Jumbo to community band Tuesday evening. Scared the livin' hell out of the trombones

- The action on the Kaiser is extremely short. Those little paddles don't move very far at all. The clocksprings are in great shape and each has a ratchet-type tension adjustment.

WOW! That definately one ups my satin gold 38K. I'm jealous now!

Where the heck did you find it? I have only seen photos of a hand full of satin gold Conn sousas. The only one I have ever seen in person is mine.

Could you measure the bell diameter to compare with a current cerveny?

The same as a 601/701. It looks to me like the design has little changed over the years.

I was sort of surprise to find that it tips the scales at 42 pounds. I thought it would be heavier than that. I hope that scales is weighing light! Because it's the same one that I use.

I hung around a guy that had a Conn 'Jumbo' sousa nearly identical to the one pictured above but with a 4th valve. He was at the Chicago tuba christmas this last december. He was a big guy (tall not round) and the sousaphone seemed to "suit" him. I can't imagine standing around for more than an hour with that monster on me. It made my Yamaha Sousa look miniscule in comparison. My doctor complains everytime I see him and tells me that having a sousaphone on my shoulder for prolonged periods of time is going to mess my back up, imagine what he'd say if I showed up at his office with this honker!

Wow! The 38K weighs a measured 35 lbs. I can't imagine how much a Jumbo with a 4th valve must weigh!
