Wim, TubaTinker did state the bell diameter

To you that is 500mm! The same as a 601/701. It looks to me like the design has little changed over the years.

Oh! I think I know that one. If you have to ask how much it weighs, you aren't strong enough to play it.

I was sort of surprise to find that it tips the scales at 42 pounds. I thought it would be heavier than that. I hope that scales is weighing light! Because it's the same one that I use.

I hung around a guy that had a Conn 'Jumbo' sousa nearly identical to the one pictured above but with a 4th valve. He was at the Chicago tuba christmas this last december. He was a big guy (tall not round) and the sousaphone seemed to "suit" him. I can't imagine standing around for more than an hour with that monster on me. It made my Yamaha Sousa look miniscule in comparison. My doctor complains everytime I see him and tells me that having a sousaphone on my shoulder for prolonged periods of time is going to mess my back up, imagine what he'd say if I showed up at his office with this honker!

Wow! The 38K weighs a measured 35 lbs. I can't imagine how much a Jumbo with a 4th valve must weigh!

Maybe it depends. My 40K appears to weigh less than the 38K in question, and it has the large diameter bell and an extra valve. By that logic, if a 3 valve jumbo weighs 42 lbs, a 4 valve might be about 40.

What a shame that you didn't have those two horns a few years ago when I visited you and purchased a sousaphone from you. I might not have gone home quite so soon... :)

I did have the privilege of playing another one of those 3-valve Conn Jumbo sousaphones for a performance with my Dixieland band while the horn's owner sat in the audience. What a treat that was for me!

It's certainly a small World. The owner of that sousa you played just called me! We're gonna let our 'jumbos' meet one of these days!

Be sure to call me if they produce a litter of baby "jumbos". I'll take the runt.
