Maybe a stupid question...
What would be the benefits of joining AFM as a college student? I saw there was a University Student membership.

If you're in an area that has work for Union musicians, you can get in on it. Possibly. And you can learn how that Local works, which does vary from place to place, but you will also get the International Musician, and that can be helpful.

The AFM does not get you work. If a booker doesn't know you, you won't be on her/his call list. You have to make those contacts yourself.

I have no direct knowedge of that membership, but if you play with many permanent groups (ie: symphony), union membership is a requirement. Presumably, it would come at a lower cost than regular membership.

If you don't need it, outside of receiving the International Musician (which lists vacancies in permanent ensembles), I am lost at the benefit. Perhaps to the traveling player?

The AFM has twice gone to bat for me, at their expense, when a person hiring me or my group has tried to stiff me on the pay. As long as I have had a contract (in my estimation, you are at great risk if you play without one) the Union will take the purchaser of your music to court and collect your money for you. The standard contract also places the burden for paying for the use of copyrighted music on the purchaser. And, when you travel, if you get stranded, the Union will help you get back to Kansas without any ruby red slippers. It is worthwhile protection.
