Pedal G in Encounters - Help!
Hey TubeNet... I'm almost of at the end of my rope trying to get this pedal G in Encounters II by Kraft. Any advice?

Re: Pedal G in Encounters - Help!
Ok, That going to throw this out there. Do not try to play low buy puckering your lips all the way out, like your trying to make a horse noise. If you role your lips to far out then they are no longer in position to vibrate together. The lips must remain close enough to one another to vibrate. For me, I "feel" like I'm cupping my lips together in a very relaxed way when I play down in that range. Along with a little shift to add more upper lip and a slight push out of the jaw. I can also do it by adding more bottom lip, but since I normally play with more upper lip, I keep it that way.
So try using a relaxed cupped feeling to you lips and more upper or bottom lip and a slight push of the jaw forward. And see if you can make it happen for you.

I should have included that I am playing F tuba. Thanks for all the help so far - I will try all of these suggestions! =)

Is this a G in the neighborhood of 20 hz you're discussing?

Do you mean the Double-Pedal C (octave below pedal C)?AsiagoCheezBagel wrote:Hey TubeNet... I'm almost of at the end of my rope trying to get this pedal G in Encounters II by Kraft. Any advice?
I don't have the part in front of me, so I may be totally wrong, but I would swear that it's a C and not a G. My advice would be the slowest air you can muster, or if you can't get it that way - fake it? It is a reachable note with enough patience though.

Yes, again, I guess. I'm just trying to figure out if you're discussing "possible" notes. The open pedal tone for an F tuba is the F 4, leger lines below the bass staff, 43.65 Hz. The C, then would be the 6th space below (32.7 Hz) and the G the 7th line below (~24 Hz).

Yes, I am referring to the pedal G (aka G-0 aka around 20hz aka one octave below the G 3 ledger lines below the staff) in the multiphonics section. I have just been faking the double pedal C, haha. But I'd gladly accept any advice for getting that too!

Re: Pedal G in Encounters - Help!
can you play the pedals above it A, Ab etc? ...it's hard to guess on here what the issue might be for you....trial and error has always worked for me and have you asked that great professor of yours? I switch to a different face in the pedal register...I guess you could say a pedal embouchure...I don't even know if Jay does that. My guess is he does. It allows me to have more security in hitting those pedals and at various dynamics. I went through a phase where in the upper register i could hit every note till F and then G up till the high Bb. I couldn't play F# to save my life....it could just be finding where it sits on your horn and/or mentally believing it will happen when you've never been able to do it. Just keep trying and keep up the faith...you'll get it.

Please get your facts straight - I made no such offer.tubashaman2 wrote:I am pretty sure everyone who plays the encounters fakes the pedal c. If they didn't fake the pedal C and would post a recording of it, Todd would be giving the first person to post $20
