Professionals Currently Playing a Miraphone

Which professionals "out there" use a Miraphone 186 or 188 as their primary performance tuba?

Or...any Miraphone brand CC tuba?

Matt Gaunt has owned and played many tubas professionally, and several of them have been 186's.

Yes, it would happen to be. I was its second user. The year prior to my getting that tuba it was in the hands of John Rider, who has been in the USAF Band or Flight for about 150 years or so. It is a good tuba with a solid history.

I have had the pleasure, then, of playing this horn! It was quite good. *drool*

Just two that easily come to mind:

Mark Cox (Central Michigan University)- 186 5v CC

Ron Davis (University of South Carolina) 186 5v CC and 188 5v CC

All due respect to teachers/professors, but I think the question is referring to orchestral performance, and/or full-time soloists or quintet players, as opposed to teacher/part-time players. At least, that's interpretation. Just like in the VW...

However, right off hand I can't think of any professional in an American orchestra who plays on a 186 or 188.

Steve Bryant uses a 188 in the Austin Symphony Orchestra.

I been using a 188 since 1983 as my main instrument. It is currently in use with the SouthWest BrassWorks and during the summers with the Breckenridge Festival Orchestra. Other than that, I just use it as a demonstration tool while I teach 18 kollidj students each week.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to ask the question because I notice that there are a lot of people that start on a 186 or 188, but then choose another tuba as their main CC axe later in their lifetime. IMO, there's absolutely nothing wrong with using either horn, I just wanted to see the "roster" of current professional users. Thanks!

The one horn of all I have played over the last 3 1/2 decades I wish I could have back was the 186 CC I played that was checked out to me by the university music department where and when I was in grad school. (I didn't have my own, because my grad school pursuit was not music related. But the chair of the department did offer me a substantial scholarship and stipend as a Grad Asst if I would change. Maybe I should have...nah.)

Gene Pokorny still uses his 186 (that served him so
well in his early professional life) on some performances
w/The Chicago Sym.

Years ago I was so fortunate to sit next to Gene at a Harvey Phillips TubaSantas gig in Chicago and we were talking about his 186. I remember him saying that the comment from his fellow artists were:
"Don't ever sell that tuba!"
