Tuba Appraisal

So I flew into Michigan yesterday from across the country with my Firebird. The tuba was severely damaged on the bell section, even though my tuba flew in a pretty good flight case. The horn was taped shut and upon picking it up all of the tape was undone. I believe it to be TSA neglect and am in the process of filing a claim. My hope is to get the horn replaced. They said they either need a receipt, bank statement, or appraisal. I bought the horn in mint condition used for $7500. The horns now go for around $9000. I think and appraisal would be the best option. Does anyone know how to go about this. Should I contact the Miraphone sales staff, or can any professional do it?

Speaking from personal experience...TSA and the airline have a maximum amount they can pay out per damaged item, unless you paid extra for insurance at the ticket counter. Even then the maximum is under $2k. (usually)

I am hoping you insured your instrument as soon as you bought the horn. If you dont have insurance on your horn, you now know why they offer it. You might get enough from the airline to fix the bell. Don't hold your breath on replacement. Seriously.

I live in Michigan. I dont know if there is a miraphone representative near by. I just hope if I get it fixed, it will sound the same.

sometimes it actually sounds better when you get major repairs done on the horn.

Depending on where you are in Michigan it's not too long a drive to Eastern Iowa to have Lee Stofer take care of it. Whether it will be visibly noticeable depends on the nature and scale of the damage, but it should be able to be repaired to the extent that it won't negatively impact the sound.
