Update Update: I just returned from our good friday presentation of the stations of the cross, and "Te Deum" by Arvo Part. An intersting piece... no tuba, but 'aeolian harp', string quartet/quintet, "prepared piano" (the directors score has instruction on what to do to a regular piano for this), three choirs (sort of), and we also used a regular paino but I think that wasn't in the score.

I bought an Aspire One last December to use as an email device while at conferences. I went to the Christian book store and bought a Bible case, which fits it perfectly including the small power brick and an external USB optical drive. I can carry that around a conference without the shoulder dislocation that results from hauling around my briefcase, and I can open it up for making calendar notations and doing email much more easily. I just have to spend a little time synchronizing my calendar and email archive when I get back to my regular laptop. It will even run a simple Powerpoint presentation using OpenOffice.

I bought a six-cell battery for it off ebay and get five hours of battery life.

But the trackpad is not wonderful, and I bought a wireless mouse with a tiny enough USB receiver that I never have to remove it. The keyboard is actually usable, though slightly cramped.

XP Home is fine unless you need to configure a domain hosted network.

If it had a touchscreen, I'd be using it as a navigation computer in my motorhome. But it doesn't.

Had a great Easter.
Took the grandson out in the front yard to pitch him a couple of buckets of baseballs.
Casey's interest in baseball popped up too late to get him on a team this year. My son and I take turns playing catch with him and pitching so he can bat. Good ole Casey always shags his share and more of the balls and helps refill the bucket.
The whole family watched us and made mean comments about my ineptitude as a pitcher. They laughed about the table I brought out to set the bucket of balls on. Why bend from the waist if it is avoidable? The table also came in handy to hide behind from fast moving grounders.
The best thing about being an old geezer is that nobody expects much of anything from you. When you make any contribution at all they are so happy and amazed.

My tuba got in an accident today...my friend and I were playing on each other's horns (he's a trombonist, and I trust him completely). As I was putting his away (to go to a choir thing), i just heard a crash behind me...he was putting mine back in the case, and picked it up by my 5th valve slide, which he didn't know wasn't the bottom bow (I think that's what he was reaching for, and grabbed the wrong one by accident). The bell is now crumpled on one side, and I swear that the 5th valve is acting differently.

I loaned my brother-in-law my chainsaw eight years ago.
After he wore it out he asked to borrow another one.

UPDATE:

It appears I am now the official accompanist of the OSU tuba studio. So far, I have the following pieces:

Vaughan Williams - Tuba Concerto
J. S. Bach - Sonate II (arr. Walter Hilgers)
Robert Spillman - Two Songs
Benedetto Marcello - Sonata No. 5 in C Major
Arthur Frackenpohl - Concertino for Tuba and String Orchestra
Antonio Capuzzi - Andante and Rondo from Concerto for Double Bass (arr. Philip Catelinet)
Alec Wilder - Suite No. 1 ("Effie Suite")

Two other students in the studio have yet to give me their jury pieces. I now accompany approximately 80% of the brass students at this fine university.

You have been updated.
