Indeed. That is a horn that could get close to really being a do it all horn. But when I was shopping for tubas, I didn't have a do it all budget. Hence I have what I have.

Sometimes, it is better to divvy up the budget for one new tuba for two or three servicable used tubas that have different characteristics to play the different ensembles. I resemble this remark.

search is over.........I played a Thor.............it does it all. Plays in tune, plays fast, plays sweet, plays HUGE, plays smooth. If you haven't played one do so. It's the way a tuba should be.

um, look for "your voice" in your head, it's not in the horn its the sound in your head. Talk to your teacher about that ....

I'm not sure I fully agree with this.

I understand that everyone should have - and develop - a personal sound. But we make choices of instrument based on what aids that sound concept. Indeed, I don't think my voice translates well through a small Dupont Eb. Or through a First Act trombone. An Alex F is the closest thing to "my voice" (not the quotes we're all using here). Someone else owns the one I love most (still trying to talk 'em out of it), so I wait patiently. In the meantime, I've picked up a Kalison CC (not for the same uses, of course) because it reflects, translates and in a sense "is" my voice for a 4/4 contra.

YMMV, but I think we pick our horns not just for playability, but for the sound they help us to make with more facility. I still sound like me on a POS tuba, but it doesn't sound good, and it isn't the way I want my voice to sound.

True............and wrong...........if you disagree go to your local middle school, find the tuba player, listen to him play then grab his horn and play it. If you don't sound better than he does, please neve post anything here again. Of course you sound better, you are a mature musician. However, unless you own a crap horn and the kid owns a professional grade horn, you should sound better on your horn.

Yes, the sound is in the player, AND in the horn.

However, "the music" comes from the player. If the music is not in you, it can't come out of you.

have you purchased the Thor yet? if not, i have a PT20-PS with bag and hard case for THOUSANDS less than the thor WITHOUT cases and i'm paying for shipping. the sound is not as big but is similar and might be a little better at 'doing it all'. it's on the for sale page. good luck!

I would be willing to bet that any professional would be able to maintain some velocity on whatever horn you are playing. Unless you are playing on a BAT it shouldn't even be much of an issue right? Wouldn't your fundamental sound be the deciding factor in getting a new tuba? What is the point of playing fast if your tone isn't nice, or what you want? Do your valves have problems? Are you sure that you are maintaining them well?
