Cannot be a 38K, which only has 3 valves.

One cannot see the pistons, but the give-away is the 4th valve slide below the 3rd slide.

It very well might be a 40K, but the area just above the body knee isn’t clearly contoured. If it is fatter than the 40K, it would be the 48K.

The guy playing trombone in the photo might be Fiorello La Guardia, later to be the powerful Mayor of New York City. The short stature, facial features, and disarranged lock of hair suggest this might be La Guardia. His father was a U.S. Army bandmaster in 1898 and he might have influenced his son to play a brass instrument.

I can only speak for the class that I was in with the teacher that I had, but political corruption, including the numerous scandals, were given considerable discussion time in class.

The respected author, Malcolm Gladwell, says that Harding was chosen to run by his party because he was tall and good looking, citing him as a good example of bad criteria.

Since I have played a 38K, and can compare physically as well as through pictures, the bell rim to throat ratio on that 4-valve block leads me to believe it's a 40K with the 24 inch bell, which would have been pretty standard in the early 1920's.

An interesting fact. I would have guessed William Howard Taft just because he fit the physical profile of a tuba player. Warren Harding was arguably one of the worst presidents in our history, then he got shot....I think any tuba player out there with Political Aspirations should take this as a hint! He was never shot (at least, not while in office). He died of either a heart attack or stroke in the third year of his presidency.

As to him being one of the worst presidents in history...well, history has been hard on President Harding, choosing to focus on the Teapot Dome scandal and not his accomplishments in office. He was, after all, handed a rather dirty plate as the country was emerging from the darkness of World War I. I imagine the veterans of the United States Armed Forces have a more positive opinion of his presidency, as they have much to thank him for.

I studied that in my 11th grade AP American History class about 6 years ago. We didn't cover that as much as we did the "Guilded Age" stuff but we did cover the Teapot Dome Scandal.
