Brass quintet tuba features

Hi Tubenetters,


I am looking for suggestions for brass quintet tuba features to use for education programs. In the past I have used the Canadian Brass Flight of the Tuba Bee and an arrangement The Elephant from Carnival of the Animals. Any suggestions would be appreciated and whatever information on obtaining them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Get the Canadian Brass version of Amazing Grace (arr Luther Henderson) and give the trumpet intro to the tuba. We used to do this with just the tuba on stage at the beginning of the set and have the rest of the quintet come on stage and get into place as the tuba was playing this. A little cheesy but the audience liked it.

Just recently on Canadian Brass' high Society CD, they recorded the negro spiritual, Deep River. The music is published in the Canadian Brass High Society books, which have a lot of other cool stuff in them too. Also, out of the Beatles books, She is Leaving Home. I think that is what you meant by educational? Featuring the tuba, and not about animals......

Stars and Stripes Forever will work with the Tuba playing the Piccolo solo. I have done Queen of the Night Aria by Mozart a few times and that has been a hit, but it might depend upon on the age of the students??

The Canadian Brass version of Tuba Tiger Rag was a great hit at LSU, not sure about anywhere else.

The Plog Four Sketches has some pretty good tuba stuff, as long as the quintet can handle the rest of the parts. May not be appropriate for some audiences though.

Second movement of James Grant's Brass Quintet is an arrangement of a movement from his Three Furies for Tuba and Orchestra. Basically, it's Fury II with accompaniment and it gets a great reaction. Worth a look, the rest of the quintet is very challenging, but this movement relies mostly on the skills of ye' ol' tooba player.

Depending on the age/maturity of the educational concert crowd -- the first movememnt of conductor and composer Andre Previn's Four Outings for Brass might be a consideration. First performed at the 1974 South Bank Summer Festival in London, it was written for the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble (five-part, thus quintet). The first movement is pretty light in character, and is a tuba feature. (John Fletcher was the tubist, and the entire work is dedicated to him.)

Good piece, not tripe nor ear candy cr*p.

While I have not yet heard the CD, I know that the Center City Brass Quintet has the entire work on their Street Song disc. If like everything else they have recorded, it should be excellent, and would provide a very good performance for you to judge for yourself.
