The member/name is Le Frisé. Obviously French of which you can see from the spelling characteristic (caracteristique). So this person obviously isn't fluent in English.

I think as a young student, you may not really need to learn bass tuba yet depending on your skill on the contrabass. However if you really wanted to make the jump, I would say that neither one of them is "superior" to the other. Both have their pros and cons. You should get your hand on some and see how you like them. Maybe check out youtube and listen to examples of each so you can get a sense of the sound as well. F tuba's tend to be the "standard" here and in Europe however there are tons of players who play on Eb. My own teacher, for example, plays on Eb and it suits him perfectly. I think that if you would be doing a lot of bass tuba playing especially in quintets and stuff, an Eb could be nice because it has a bit "tubbier" of a sound. However you won't get that really nice German F tuba sound.

Your English is fine -- much better than my French (glad you speak both).

It is an interesting topic, and it does come down to personal preference and what you're going to use the instrument for. Play as many as you can in both keys ... when you find one that, as Roger Lewis puts it, "shakes hands with you", you've found your horn! Hope your search goes well.

It really makes no difference which you play. It really makes no difference what you play NOW, regarding what you'd move to for a bass tuba.

I agree that the horn will choose you. But, until you develop a feel for a bass tuba, I'd suggest not spending very much on a first F or Eb. Your best idea would be to borrow one. If that's not possible, look for a good instrument at a very good price.

There are a few out there--Cerveny F, some older Besson Eb, some older B&S or Mirafone F or Eb. If you aren't familiar with F or Eb tuba, I'd suggest asking someone you trust, someone who IS familiar with them, to help you pick out an instrument. Once you've gotten used to the feel of the higher pitch, you can be more confident in your choice.

The notion that Eb is cheaper than F interests me. I don't think that's the case. What is the case is that there are some ancient Eb tubas on the market for low prices compared with F tubas, but I'm not sure they provide a strong alternative for a student adding bass tuba to his contrabass capability. A modern Eb tuba is as good, and easily as expensive, as a modern F tuba. 25-year-old F tubas are probably priced competitively with 25-year-old pro-quality Eb tubas, as well. One can find old three-valve Eb tubas intended for student use for cheap, but I'm not sure they will fulfill the stated requirements.
