Lightest-in terms of weight-CC and F tubas

Post by bisontuba »

Hi-
I am curious to see what are the lightest-in terms of physical weight, not in sound-of professional CC and/or F tubas? My old Alex CC is very light--as is my 6v Alex F, but curious to see what other 'light' CC and F's are out there. Thanks.

Regards-

Gronitz piston tubas are very light. A friend's PCK was very similar in weight to a 6v B&S F tuba.

I would expect that a PCM would be even lighter.

I vote for pre-WWI Cerveny tubas as the lightest horns made, maybe include the Lidl marque as well. Joe Hebert, longtime New Orleans teacher/player, had a Kaiser Cerveny BBb which weighed in at about fourteen pounds. Breath on it hard and it dented. Play it and fall in love. OMG, it could crank out a ton of sound.

A friend in Orlando has a Lidl Kaiser BBb which I remember as being quite light also.

I have a Cerveny Kaiser EEb which is light but not in comparison to the BBb. The valve section is the heaviest part and it weighs the same whether it's mounted on the BBb or EEb, so the EEb doesn't feel as light.

BTW and OTS, I recently saw Joe Hebert (pronounced "A-bear" - French you know) as a representative for the St. Petersburg tuba. Joe was a phenomenal player who worked in NYC (Stokowski's American Symphony and freelancing) for years but missed New Orleans and moved back. He still teaches at Loyola N/O and lead the jazz band for a long time. Great bassist, too. If you talk to Joe at a convention somewhere, be assured that he knows his stuff. A real player and a real gentleman, Vince is lucky to have him representing the St. Pete brand.

My Alex 173 (new-ish) is also quite light. Second the Gronitz pistons being light also.

I tried a tuba once that was a lot heavier than it looked. And it was made of clear plastic...oh hi Brian.

The Yamaha 621s are both really light tubas. I suspect that the new "traveling F" from Meinl-Weston is really light, as well. French C tubas, however, are not light at all.
Any time at all is tuba time. Watch for the signs.

Okay, I was curious so I pulled out the scale...

4 valve Alexander 163 CC is 20.5 lbs
5 valve Alexander F is 14.5 lbs

My older Piggy is the lightest horn that I know of. This includes 184, 621, and Conn 2j. Wish I had it when there were some strolling gigs going on around here.
