Phil Sinder recieves "Excellence in Teching Award" from MSU

Post by jon112780 »

EDITED...

I received an electronic newsletter from the Michigan State University College of Music (my alma mater) and one of the articles caught my attention-

Music professors receive excellence in teaching award

During the College of Music's May commencement ceremony, David Rayl and Philip Sinder had the honor of being the inaugural recipients of the Dortha J. and John D. Withrow Fund for Excellence in Teaching Award.

Rayl, professor of music and director of choral programs, also serves the college as associate dean for graduate studies and research. Sinder began teaching at MSU in 1982. He is professor of tuba and euphonium and is a member of the faculty quintet, the Beaumont Brass.

Both Rayl and Sinder were chosen by their peers for the honor on the basis of their long-standing excellent and significant contributions to the college. They received a cash award along with the recognition.

The Withrow Fund for Excellence in Teaching, a $50,000 endowment provided by longtime supporters of MSU, will be awarded annually to leading members of the College of Music faculty who have rendered distinguished service to the university, the college, and to the student body through excellence in instructional, performance, and/or scholarship activities.

"We should be recognizing teachers, especially those who are student focused, for their efforts in bringing our students along in a way that makes the university proud," Dottie Withrow said.

Just read this today as well! It really overjoys me to see his reward for being such a positive attribute to mine and others education.

What exactly are you referring to? If you're going to make a slightly offensive comment, maybe you should give some examples.

I was truly happy to hear of this. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient. I was one of Phil's early students at Michigan State, 1983-1987. The quality of musicians he produces, on both tuba and euphonium, is very impressive. Phil is a fantastic player as well. If you have never heard Aerodynamics I would strongly suggest it. He is also a great orchestral player. Did you know that when Phil won the Houston Symphony job many years ago it was over Gene Pokorny? On top of everything else he is a good person.

Great job Phil!
I saw ghost riders in the sky, and they each played a York EEb tuba.

Sorry if I "smarted off" - I am the child of a college professor and a published novelist, and I have worked (day job) for many years in Graphic Design - even though I am now a slave to SpellCheck, I cannot help seeing proofreading "fails" everywhere!

Maybe there IS an "Excellence in Teching Award" somewhere...
