Despite it's enormous proportions it is reported to play and respond very well. Being a Rudy fan I too would love to own one of these!

The 5/4 BBb bayreuth model is on my wish list.

And even if it is owned by a Vendor, I doubt it is for sale.

Klaus,

I played the 5/4 and 6/4 in Frankfurt and was blown away (what's in a word) by the quality of finish and sound.
Some day I'll drive to Diespeck...

I was fortunate enough to visit the Rudys at Diespeck last year and played the 5/4 and 6/4 BBb tubas. The 6/4 is an absolute monster, this photo shows the tuning slide compared to a normal (not small) mouthpiece.
BIG BBb tuning slide.jpg
It played very well for such a huge tuba, but despite it's novelty I cannot imagine a situation where I would choose it over the 5/4. The 5/4 is an absolutely gorgeous tuba, and is wonderful throughout the range. Just because it has a GIANT brother doesn't mean that it is in any way small :D

I played the Fafner briefly at a couple of places, and if I was in the market for a big rotary BBb the Rudy 5/4 would be the one - without hesitation.

I must say that in my one comparison of Rudy 5/4 v Fafner, the Rudy sounded best to me from under the bell. However, I have heard comments that the Fafner projects better out into the hall, so a comparison in large space with friend (or at least digital recorder) to provide feedback from out front would be good idea before deciding which to buy.

You may be right Jonathan, but the question is rather academic, a large BBb would be an absolute luxury for me, I don't have any need for one :D

I visited Rudy Meinl's shop a few times when I lived in Germany. IMHO, the Rudy 5/4 horns are every bit as large as most other manufacturer's 6/4s. The Rudy Meinl 6/4 horns are in a league of their own. . . fantastic sound, can take every ounce of air you can dish out without even flinching.

Dan Oberloh has my dream horn right now....a Lyon Healy 6/4 BBb. Funny thing is that it was my dream horn before the master accepted it into his shop, I'm not sure that I'm ready for what it's going to be like when I get it back from him. Fortunatly I have a good while to stew on it before it will be ready. I still can't wait though.

I have a couple dreams...

My Alma Mater's Alex F
King Rotary Monster BBb
King 4v Eb Sousaphone (like Bell's)
Having recently played one, a RM 4/4 CC
A York Monster Eb with 4 front action valves
Another Boosey Imperial Eb that I can convert to front action
A Monk C Serpent

And that's just tubas/tuba related instruments...

But I have several of my dream horns:

Yamaha 621 F
Alex 164
Get'wards 1062 FDY
King 5B
Guichard C Ophicleide
And I cannot discount my current Imperial Eb... It's gotten me everywhere I've wanted to go. I love it, and hate it. But it's a part of me.

I am still getting use to my Rudolf Meinl 5/4 BBb, but has proved to be a worthwhile purchase. :tuba:
With the addition of My Rudy and a new sectionmate playing a big Cervany CC, and a great player on a Conn 5J,
the band director says we are blending really well.
I have joined another concert band [and AFM],
so now I get plenty of practice and performance time. Even with all the rain outs
I have a used Alan Baer CC euro shank mouthpiece that I bought from Dillons,
but I'm thinking of getting a euro Bayamo, I tried a Loud LM-3 with the Rudy, and thought it
robbed me of some high range and clarity.

Anyone else thinks the Rudy 5/4 BBb looks similar to the old Miraphone 190 Daisy Cutter?
Other than both being german Kaisers!

Silver plated Miraphone 191 in gold brass with five valves, but with some changes so that the first valve is just like the four valved version.

Handmade Nirschl WN-15. Had a chance to buy one a few years back and didn't. I still kick myself for it, but I know it's more tuba than I need.

A possible "dream" tuba pair:
-- Gold brass Miraphone 188 :D
-- Gold brass Miraphone Firebird

Half of that is attainable right now. :tuba:
