Buy tubas in Europe?

Post by tubaerik »

Hi
I'm located in Sweden and am currently looking for an F tuba. This board has got a great "For Sale" section but virtually all of it is located in USA. Is there any European equivalent of this "for sale" board or a big store somewhere that is selling a lot of used tubas? Maybe some of the Europeans on Tubenet can help me on the right track.

And as I'm already writing...
I'm looking for a good quality German style F tuba with preferably 6 valves. I can pay somewhere around 5500 usd.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

I have had the same problem. Some places you might try out:

Ebay.de
Ebay.co.uk
Blocket.se (Swedish secondhand site. Usually has a couple of nice tubas)
Tubaforum.com (Norwegian tuba site)

Otherwise I would call around. There is at least a couple of Brass shops in Copenhagen that usually has some used tubas. These are not always listed on their websites. Also these guys usually know if somebody is getting ready to sell their instruments. I would try to contact:

SBW.dk (Scandinavian brass and woodwind. The owner Asger is a very nice guy)

Gottfried.dk ( large brass shop in Copenhagen. They have a big workshop and even builds their own instruments. Sometimes a bit on the expensive side though)

Marno.dk (Another brass shop in Copenhagen)

And also "Brass Centrum" in Copenhagen. They don't have a website but try and email them at (brasscentrum AT adr.dk)

Good luck in your hunt

Buying tubas in Denmark is tough if you want to try out high end instruments with very specific set-ups. About 25 years ago a store opened with a fairly large stock of various tubas, but that proved itself too expensive and that store is no longer there.

I have close relations with Gottfried since almost 50 years ago, and they also avoid storing very expensive tubas. From time to time they take in used instruments, but one cannot rely on stock being available without asking first. They have very good repairmen especially for woodwinds. They will do fine brass work also, but for special work they will cooperate with Brass Centrum, a one man shop with a very good brass repairman.

Scandinavian Brass & Woodwind is an outlet very strong in CD’s. It has no repair facilities and ships its repairwork to Aarhus.

Marno Sørensen imports Bach and Getzen and have a good stock, only not of tubas.

I tried to find good brasses in Kiel some years ago, but apparently there are no really strong German tuba stores north of Hamburg. Other threads have suggested that Gronitz are well stocked currently, so they may be worth a call.

Contact Mark Carter at http://www.MrTuba.com. He usually has some good used F in stock. He even gets buyers from Germany

Thank you for all the information.

I had already checked some of the sites you mentioned, but they didn't seem to keep their sites updated with any used instruments they would have in stock. Maybe they have more to offer if I contact them. That Hornboerse site really had some nice horns in stock though.

It's no rush for me though and I'm sure that I eventually will find the right horn for me

46K: A Yamaha is not exactly what I'm looking for I'm afraid, but thanks for the offer.

My experience is that this is common. Most European dealer do not seem to have awakened to the selling potential of the internet. Your best bet is to email each asking if they have anything which suits your requirements.

I notice the same problem from the opposite side, as I am trying to sell a tuba which is not so common in Europe, and there is hardly a good site to advertise it.. I think it's good that more and more european tubenetters are active on this forum and it's up to us european to make the "For Sale" section richer and richer with offers and trades within the EU. Without duties and with a reasonable cost of shipments by truck, I think that shipping a horn from Greece to Finland, or Denmark to Spain or wherever it's at least less miles than from Maine to Louisiana!

From time to time I check out http://www.netinstruments.com" target="_blank. This seems to be a world-wide selling area and you might want to take a peek and see what's out there.

Good luck on your search.

Just my $0.02.
