That must have been done in a union shop.

Joe, I trust you refrained from using that old saw: "You get what you're paying for."? To refrain would show a great amount of maturity--hurt like hell, though!

I don’t know why he went elsewhere in the first place. If it wasn’t because you had declared your shop overbooked, it must have taken some nerve to come back to you.

More like panic and worse dread not to if the horns were to be playable by the time school starts back up shortly!

Sounds more like the horns spent the afternoon with a band parent and a soldering iron. I charge double to fix stuff like that.

Re: I just didn't realize what was going on out there...
Today I played through the school tubas at the high school I used to go to, in order to let the director know what needed to be fixed. Out of 8 tubas, two worked. First up were a slew of old Yamaha upright 3 valve horns, (the ones that are a pain in the *** to play if you are anywhere under 6 feet tall.) One of these had a bow so badly pinched that it was almost entirely closed off. Another one was missing a valve. The top cap, bottom cap spring and valve were just gone. One of the rotary horns had a loose valve assembly, (as in, the valve assembly could be grabbed and pulled about 4 inches away from the horn.) The Miraphone, one of three such horns the school owns, looked like it had been held upside down and dropped straight on its bell from a large height. The bell garland was so beaten up that I could put my fingers under it. If I wanted to, I could probably rip it off with just my bare hands.
Huhh, those horns weren't as bad when I left high school. I just don't know what they've been doing since then.

it is always surprizing to me when people try to do something, with out seeming to have even looked at what they are trying to do.

Sometimes it is easier to laugh than to cry. You will want to spend a few minutes at "There, I Fixed It: Epic Kludges + Jury Rigs." The site is in need of a few representative brass instrument fixes. http://thereifixedit.com/" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blankbloke wrote:Have you ever been horrified but found yourself laughing at the same time? . . . .

A fine instrument repairman is worth his weight in gold.
A fine repairman (repairwoman actually) turned a middling Yorkbrunner into a terrific playing instrument.
---
A bad instrument repairman apparently uses his weight in solder.
I hope you stuck it to them (but I'd take a bet that you didn't).
