Microphone for live tuba

Post by punk_tuba »

Hello,
I'm currently playing tuba in a delta blues group and i'm looking for better microphone to use live. A shure 58 isn't picking up all the lows that i would like it too.

I'm wondering about a kick drum mic.

does anyone recommend mics that they use live or for a similar playing situation

I've used a kick drum mic before with ok success but I much prefer a LDC such as the Audio Technica 3035. Works great for a multitude of uses and does a great job on a tuba.

an SM58 is not designed to pick up low frequencies. It's a vocal mic, with a pronounced roll-off of lows as distance from the source increases.

A kick drum mic, on the other hand, is designed for low frequencies. Makes sense, doesn't it? For your application, I agree that putting the mic dead center in the bell throat is perfect.
