Tommy Johnson recordings

Post by goldtuba »

Is there anywhere that I can find a list of all the soundtracks that Tommy Johnson recorded? I'm sure that I'm not the only person that would like to see it.

imdb.com--Internet Movie DataBase. It's a huge collection of information about movies and the people involved in making them. There's a lot of TV and other related info, too. The section on Tommy is just a tiny excerpt of his total body of work.

There's a partial listing of his movie work at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Johnson_%28tubist%29. A little work with Google can find some of his TV work.

Look on the "who played tuba" section for the user names poomshanka (I think I got that right), Jim Self, and Norman Pearson. When you find them, send them each a nice PM with you questions. There are countless others that may be able to help, but those three (poomshanka, Jim, and Norm) can probably give you the most accurate and comprehensive information. Be mindful of the fact that these guys are extremely busy (Norm Pearson is Principal tuba in the LA Phil, for example).

I would also suggest searchin the forum for "Tommy Johnson."

I've done all of the above, except contact Jim and Norm. I don't think that I'll bother them now with school and the symphony season starting. I'm sure they both have enough on their plates. I just felt like posting after watching Beetle Juice and started getting curious.

There is a compiling, we call it "The List". It was generated from the Film Musician's Summary Fund statement Tommy (and now his family) receives every year for royalties. It's by no means complete, but at the very least reflects things that generated a royalty payment as of 2004.

Too long to post here (29 single-spaced pages in a Word document). I reference it when I can in response to postings in the "Who played tuba..." forum. I always qualify my statements with the proviso that "I don't know that there weren't other tuba players involved in the session(s)", or words to that effect. The list only shows dates that Tommy played, and is no guarantee that he was the only tuba player involved. If you have questions about a specific score, I can look it up for you. There are obviously other players here in town whose work you've heard, and L.A. isn't the only place movie scores get recorded. Some might argue that it's the best place scores get recorded - an assertion I would certainly hesitate to argue against. Regardless, sometimes the best I can do is confirm something *wasn't* Tommy, or at least that a particular title doesn't appear on The List.

Yes, Beetlejuice was Tommy and Jim. I remember them telling us about it when I was at USC. Definitely up there with Close Encounters and Jaws as one of the great tuba film scores of all time!

Thank you Poomshanka. I guess if I have anymore questions, I'll just leave a post in the "Who played tuba..." forum after checking through the forum so you don't have to repeat yourself. I would ask you for a copy of the list, but I'm assuming that you don't want to duplicate it

The List may some day be incorporated into a public-facing site, but for now, I'm happy to lurk in the "Who played tuba..." forum and chime in when I can...
