I am convinced that 90% of the problems with rhythm, tone, intonation, articulation, technique, and overall prowess on the horn are related to air issues.

This is going to church with me tonight as the devotional for orchestra rehearsal. I've been on the same page with Rich for along time but didn't know it. His monologue hits the nail square on the head. Profound!
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

My youngest son, Chris (HS senior), the euphonium player, recently made All-State again. It figures that I can't think of the composer of the piece he played, but it was an unaccompanied 3 mvt. sonata for euph. The middle mvt. was entitled, Song. I loved it and the way he played it. So, without telling him, I went into his stack of music, pulled the piece and copied the 2nd mvt., so I could play it too. It wasn't until I actually sat down to play it, that I noticed the word, "Dad" written in the left corner. When I got around to asking him why he wrote that there, I could see he was a little embarrassed, and he said he would send me a link on my computer. He sent me the Rich Matteson/Louis Armstrong link. Wudda kid!

I heard Matteson tell this story many years ago at the NY Brass Conference.
Several years later at a tuba conference in Boston I asked him to repeat it, and he did.
Thank you for posting the YouTube link; it's worth hearing again and again.
