Difficulty of BAND parts for Wilhelm Concertino

Post by Jedi Master »

Howdy!

Anybody had experience with the Wilhelm "Concertino"?

I need to know how challenging the band parts are. I have the possibility of playing it with a community band, but they will only get 1 rehearsal! It's a pretty good group, but due to the limited rehearsal time, if there are any "traps", it might be better to look for something else to play.

Anybody have a sense of what level (1-6) the band parts might be lableled, if one were going to do that?

Thanks!

I've played this piece with band.

I wouldn't attempt it in one rehearsal. There are too many things in the last movement in regards to interplay with tuba and voices...tempo changes and all of that sort of stuff. Just too many chances for it to fall apart. I don't remember the band parts being particularly difficult. There are some interesting things like Eb Clarinet that's a must have (if my memory serves me right) and the Oboe part isn't something you'd want someone who doesn't play Oboe very well to attempt.

That's my analysis of the band parts.

Great piece, one of my favorites

btw, I played it with the University of Southern Mississippi's Wind Ensemble (top band) we had 6 or so rehearsals and we really needed them all. The Wilhelm didn't get the majority of the rehearsal time.

I would have to agree with Thomas.
Unless the community band is made up of really great pro's who can get it together in one shot, I wouldn't advise it either. There is a lot to this really great piece that could be dangerous not to mention stressful if one rehearsal is all you have.

Good luck!
